Hamas says 13 Israelis handed over to Red Cross

Hamas says it has handed over the third batch of 13 Israelis and four foreign nationals to Red Cross.

Aljazeera reported that confirmation has been received from the Israelis that 13 captives have now been handed over to the Red Cross, nine of them children – one of them is thought to be a dual US citizen.

There are three Thai nationals and an Israeli Russian which was part of a separate deal that has come through with the agreement and liaising directly with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Qatari foreign ministry spokesman Majed Al Ansari has said that 39 Palestinians will be released in exchange for the 13 Israelis and foreign nationals handed over to the Red Cross.

Duo of JMSDF ships arrive in Colombo

The Japan Maritime Self-Defence Force (JMSDF) BUNGO and ETAJIMA arrived at the port of  Colombo on a goodwill visit this morning (01 Apr 25).

The visiting ships were welcomed by the Sri Lanka Navy in compliance with naval traditions.

The 141m long JMSDF BUNGO is an Uraga-Class Minesweeper Tender commanded by Commander TANAKA Koji and the ship is manned by a crew of 125.

Meanwhile, JMSDF Etajima, a 65-meter-long Minesweeper, is under the command of  Commander Oda Takayuki and operates with a crew of 54 personnel.

During the stay in the island, crew members of the ships will explore some tourist attractions within the city of Colombo. The ships are scheduled to set sail from Colombo on 04 Apr.

The atmospheric conditions are getting favorable for afternoon thundershowers in the most parts of the island for next few days from today (01).

Misty conditions can be expected at some places in Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, North-central and Uva provinces and in Galle, Matara and Kurunegala districts during the morning.

Showers or thundershowers will occur at several places in the most parts of the island during the afternoon or night.  Heavy rainfall of about 100 mm are likely at some places in Central, Sabaragamuwa, Western, Southern and Uva provinces and in Kurunegala and Polonnaruwa districts.

The general public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershower

Netanyahu nominates new Israeli spy chief despite court order

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has nominated a former Navy commander to head the country’s domestic security services, despite the courts having blocked his bid to fire the previous head of Shin Bet.

Netanyahu’s office announced on Monday that he had nominated Vice Admiral Eli Sharvit to lead the agency, which surveils attacks from abroad and at home, including by armed groups based in Palestine and Lebanon. However, a halt to the sacking of Ronen Bar as head of Shin Bet, ordered by the Supreme Court, remains in place.
