A surge of green hope swept across the mist-clad hills of Hantana as the “Re-green Hantana: Restoration of Degraded Lands in Hantana Environmental Protection Area” project reached an important milestone on August 15, 2025. A shramadana campaign was carried out at the restoration site near the Animal Science Farm of the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Peradeniya, Uda-Peradeniya, with the participation of nearly 80 volunteers.

What made the occasion truly special was the enthusiastic participation of the new batch of undergraduates from the Faculty of Science, who found themselves immersed in nature from the very start of their university journey. For them, it was a novel and exciting experience as they eagerly cleaned and cared for the plantation sites, discovering the joy of working hand in hand to green the environment.

This initiative is spearheaded by Prof. Thilanka Gunarathne, Senior Lecturer in Botany at the Faculty of Science, University of Peradeniya. The students were coordinated by Mr. Saumya Bandara and Dr. Rajitha Ranasinghe of the Faculty of Science, while the Explorers Club of the University of Peradeniya also extended its support to the effort.
