Despite extensive publicity and warnings about the risks of human trafficking and detention in Myanmar, Sri Lankans continue to seek employment there through illegal means, the Ministry of Defence said on Thursday.

The Ministry said that despite government warnings, 89 Sri Lankans have illegally traveled to Myanmar for employment. Some are being detained by terrorist groups in Myanmar. With efforts from both the Sri Lankan and Myanmar governments, 40 have been released, but 54 remain captive. The Sri Lankan government advises against seeking employment in Myanmar through illegal means and urges anyone with information about human trafficking to contact the Ministry of Defence or the Criminal Investigation Department.
