Acting FM Tharaka Balasuriya meets top Vietnamese official Van Nghiem

A high-level Vietnamese delegation comprising 35 members, led by Bui Van Nghiem, Member of the Party Central Committee term XIII of the Communist Party and Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee of Vietnam (CPV) called on the Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs Tharaka Balasuriya, yesterday (17)at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

During the call, a wide range of matters of mutual interest in the areas of political, trade and investment, culture, education and tourism were discussed. The commitment to further consolidate and enhance the bilateral cooperation between the two countries was reaffirmed at the meeting.

During the discussions, Sri Lanka’s application to join the Regional Economic Partnership (RCEP) Agreement was also given special focus.The visiting Vietnamese delegation also called on Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena during their stay in Sri Lanka.

Lankan-origin actress Subashini found dead in India

Indian Tamil television actress Subashini of Sri Lankan -origin, widely recognised for her role in the popular Sun TV serial Kayal, was found dead on April 6, 2026, in Chennai.

Her sudden demise has left the television industry and her fans in shock, cutting short a career that many believed was just beginning to rise.

Subashini was originally from Sri Lanka and had moved to Chennai with aspirations of building a name for herself in the Tamil entertainment industry. Like many aspiring actors, her journey was not easy.

She navigated auditions, small opportunities, and constant competition, slowly working her way into the industry. Her determination and passion for acting helped her secure roles that showcased her emotional range and on-screen presence.

Her breakthrough came with Kayal, where her performance resonated strongly with viewers. The show, which enjoys a steady following on Sun TV, brought her into the limelight and made her a familiar face in many Tamil households.

Subashini’s portrayal in the serial stood out for its emotional depth, and she quickly earned appreciation from both audiences and colleagues.

Many within the industry saw her as a rising talent with the potential to expand into more significant roles, including opportunities in cinema.

According to reports, Subashini was found dead at her residence in Iyyappanthangal, Chennai.

Initial police investigations have indicated suicide. Authorities are continuing their inquiry into the circumstances surrounding her death.

Her passing has triggered an outpouring of grief on social media, with fans and fellow actors expressing disbelief and sorrow. Many have shared clips and memories of her performances, remembering her not just as an actress but as someone who brought sincerity and authenticity to her roles.

Kusumabandu Samarawickrama passes away

Colombo Young Men’s Buddhist Association (YMBA) Vice President and Ceylon Booksellers Importers and Exporters Association former President Kusumabandu Samarawickrama passed away on Sunday(5) following a brief illness.

Samarawickrama was an old boy of the Thurstan College and was at the age of 82 at the time of his demise.

He was also a member of the Buddha Sasana Task Force.

Samarawickrama’s remains will lie at A. F. Raymond funeral parlour in Borella and the cremation will take place at the General Cemetery, Kanatta, Borella on today (7) at 3.00pm.
