The Chained Conscience
By Lynn Ockersz
To keep humans in enslaving chains,
It’s at the caring conscience,
Of the righteous few,
That the heavy-handed state,
Down the ages has ruthlessly taken aim:
The precious thing’s been chained,
Isolated and cruelly silenced,
Socrates of old being a prime case,
And this is yet another way of seeing,
The Nodding Land’s track record to date;
But the moment’s come,
When none who cares,
Could continue to look numb and agape,
At the disarray that’s in a state of accelerate,
For, cracks are widening into fissures,
In the principal pillars of the state,
And this bodes ill for democratic ways,
But the conscience has to come centre stage,
Zealously defending its threatened space,
To steer the imperilled Isle,
To a safe shore where Human Security reigns.
