SLN craft damaged in collision with Indian trawler, one fisher missing
An Indian trawler on Monday (18) evening collided with a Fast Attack Craft of the Sri Lankan Navy (SLN) off northwest of Kovilan lighthouse causing minor damages to the vessel. The Indian trawler sank. The Navy, however, rescued two poachers. The SLN continued the search for one missing fisher.
SLN units on patrol were engaged in chasing away Indian fishing trawlers poaching in Sri Lankan waters via the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL) when the collision occurred between an intruding Indian trawler and the SLN vessel.
The SLN deployed Navy divers, Fast Attack Craft and Inshore Patrol Craft to search for the missing man. The damaged SLN Fast Attack Craft has been brought to the Kankesanthurai harbour for repairs.
The development of the incident has been informed to the Indian authorities by the Navy and further investigation into the incident is currently underway.
