Weather forecast issued at 05.30 a.m.on 05 December 2023 by the Department of Meteorology
The Severe Cyclonic Storm “MICHAUNG” (PRONOUNCED AS “MIGJAUM”) over West-Central Bay of Bengal was located near latitude 14.5°N and longitude 80.3°E, at 2330hrs of 04 December, about 520km North of Jaffna. The system is likely to move northwards and cross South Andhra Pradesh coasts around 1130hrs today, December 05, 2023.
Misty Condition can be expected in Western, Sabaragamuwa, Southern Central and Uva provinces during the morning.
Several spells of showers can be expected in Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, Southern, North-western and Northern provinces. Showers or thundershowers will occur at several places elsewhere after 01.00 p.m.
Winds will be South-westerly and wind speed will be (30-40) kmph in the sea areas around the island. Wind speed may increase up to (45-50) kmph in the sea areas off the coast extending from Chilaw to Trincomalee via Mannar and Kankasanthurai and from Hambanthota to Pottuvil.
The sea areas off the coast extending from Chilaw to Trincomalee via Mannar and Kankasanthurai and from Hambanthota to Pottuvil can be rough at times but temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas can be expected during thundershowers.
The general public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

Showers will occur at times in the Sabaragamuwa province and in Galle, Matara, Kandy and Nuwara-Eliya districts. Several spells of showers may occur in the Western and North-western provinces.
Showers or thundershowers may occur at a few places in thev Uva province and in Ampara, Batticaloa and Hambantota districts after 2.00 p.m. Dry weather will prevail over the other areas of the island.
Strong winds of about (40-50) kmph can be expected at times over the Western slopes of the Central hills, the Northern, North-central and North-western provinces and in Trincomalee, Monaragala, Hambantota and Matale districts.
The general public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damage caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.
