Showery condition is expected to reduce in the North-central, Uva and Eastern provinces from today (12)

Several spells of light showers will occur in Eastern and Uva provinces. Showers or thundershowers may occur at a few places in Western, Central and Sabaragamuwa provinces and in Galle and Matara districts after 2.00 p.m.  Mainly fair weather will prevail in the other areas of the island.

Winds will be north-easterly and wind speed will be (30-40) kmph. Wind speed may increase up to (50-60) kmph at times in the sea areas off the coasts extending from Colombo to Kankasanthurai via Puttalam and Mannar.

The sea areas off the coasts extending from Colombo to Kankasanthurai via Puttalam and Mannar can be rough at times. The other sea areas around the island can be moderate but strong gusty winds and very rough seas can be expected during thundershowers

The public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

Misty conditions can be expected at some places in the Central, Sabaragamuwa, North-central and Uva provinces and in Vavuniya and Kurunegala districts during the early hours of the morning.

Showers may occur in the coastal areas of Southern province and Kalutara district during the morning while showers or thundershowers will occur at most places of the island after 1.00 pm. Fairly heavy showers above 75 mm are likely at some places in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, North-western and Southern provinces.

The general public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

The Heat index, the temperature felt on human body is likely to increase up to ‘Caution level’ at some places in the Northern, North-central, North-western, Western, Sabaragamuwa, Eastern
and Southern provinces and in Monaragala district during the day time.

The Heat Index Forecast is calculated by using relative humidity and maximum temperature and this is the condition that is felt on your body. This is not the forecast of maximum temperature. It is generated by the Department of Meteorology for the next day period and prepared by using global numerical weather prediction model data.


Effect of the heat index on human body is mentioned in the above table and it is prepared on the advice of the Ministry of Health and Indigenous Medical Services.

ACTION REQUIRED
Job sites: Stay hydrated and takes breaks in the shade as often as possible.
Indoors: Check up on the elderly and the sick.
Vehicles: Never leave children unattended.
Outdoors: Limit strenuous outdoor activities, find shade and stay hydrated.
Dress: Wear lightweight and white or light-colored clothing.

The National Building Research Organisation (NBRO) has issued Landslide Early Warnings to the Districts of Kurunegala and Ratnapura effective from 16:00 hrs on 23.04.2026 To 16:00 hrs on 24.04.2026

Accordingly,

Level 1 landslide early warnings have been issued to the Divisional Secretaries Divisions and surrounding areas of Rideegama in the Kurunegala district and Kuruwita, Kalawana, Ratnapura, Nivithigala, Pelmadulla and Eheliyagoda in the Ratnapura district.
