75 mm of rain likely at some places in Northern, North-central and Eastern provinces
Weather forecast issued at 05.30 a.m. on 17 December 2023 by the Department off Meteorology
Showers will occur at times in Northern, North-central, Eastern and Uva provinces and in Hambantota district. Showers or thundershowers will occur at several places in other areas of the island after 1.00 p.m. Fairly heavy showers about 75 mm are likely at some places in Northern, North-central and Eastern provinces.
Winds will be North-easterly and wind speed will be (30-40) kmph. Wind speed may increase up to (50-60) kmph in the sea areas off the coast extending from Colombo to Batticaloa via Puttalam, Mannar, Kankasanthurai and Trincomalee.
The sea areas off the coast extending from Colombo to Batticaloa via Puttalam, Mannar, Kankasanthurai and Trincomalee can be rough at times. The other sea areas around the island will be fairly rough but temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas can be expected during thundershowers.
The public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

Several spells of showers will occur in the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces and in Galle, Matara, Kandy and Nuwara-Eliya districts. Showers or thundershowers may occur at a few places in the Uva province and in Ampara, Batticaloa and Hambantota districts after 2.00 p.m. Dry weather will prevail over the other areas of the island.
Fairly strong winds of about (30-40) kmph can be expected at times over Western slopes of the Central hills, the North-central and North-western provinces and in Trincomalee, Hambantota and Matale districts.
