Several spells of showers will occur in Western, Sabaragamuwa and North-western provinces and in Kandy, Nuwara-Eliya, Galle and Matara districts

Weather forecast issued at 05.30 a.m. on 26 September 2024 by the Department of Meteorology 

The atmospheric conditions are getting favorable for afternoon thundershowers in most parts of the island for the next few days starting tomorrow (27).

Several spells of showers will occur in Western, Sabaragamuwa and North-western provinces and in Kandy, Nuwara-Eliya, Galle and Matara districts.  Showers or thundershowers may occur at several places in Eastern and Uva provinces and in Mullaitivu district during the evening or night.

Strong winds about (40-45)kmph can be expected at times over the western slopes of the central hills and in Northern, North-central and North-western provinces and in Matale, Hambantota and Monaragala districts.

Winds will be Westerly or South-westerly in direction  in the sea areas and wind speed will be (30-40) kmph. Wind speed can increase up to 50 kmph at times in the sea areas off the coasts extending from  Kankasanthurai to Puttalam via Mannar and  up to 60 kmph at times in the sea areas off the coasts extending from Matara to Pottuvil via Hambantota.

The sea areas off the coasts extending from Matara to Pottuvil via Hambantota will be rough at times while rhe sea areas off the coasts extending from Kankasanthurai to Puttalam via Mannar will be fairly rough at times.

The general public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

Heat index, the temperature felt on human body is likely to increase up to ‘Caution level’ at some places in the Northern, North-central, North-western, Western and Southern provinces and in Trincomalee district.

The Heat Index Forecast is calculated by using relative humidity and maximum temperature and this is the condition that is felt on your body. This is not the forecast of maximum temperature. It is generated by the Department of Meteorology for the next day period and prepared by using global numerical weather prediction model data.


Effect of the heat index on human body is mentioned in the above table and it is prepared on the advice of the Ministry of Health and Indigenous Medical Services.

ACTION REQUIRED
Job sites: Stay hydrated and takes breaks in the shade as often as possible.
Indoors: Check up on the elderly and the sick.
Vehicles: Never leave children unattended.
Outdoors: Limit strenuous outdoor activities, find shade and stay hydrated.
Dress: Wear lightweight and white or light-colored clothing.

WEATHER FORECAST FOR 13 APRIL 2026
Issued at 05.30 a.m. on 13 April 2026 by the Department of Meteorology

Misty conditions can be expected at some places in the Central, Sabaragamuwa and Uva provinces during the early hours of the morning.

Showers or thundershowers may occur at some places in the  Western, Southern and Eastern provinces in the morning and  at most places of the island  in the afternoon. Fairly heavy showers above 75 mm are likely at some places in the Western, Sabaragamuwa,  Central, Southern and North-western provinces.

The general public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.
