Heavy showers likely in Eastern and Uva Provinces and in Hambantota district

Rainy conditions are expected to be enhanced in the Northern, Eastern, Uva, Central, and Southern provinces today and tomorrow, and cloudy skies can be expected in most parts of the island.

Showers are likely in the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces during the morning  while showers will occur at times in Northern, Eastern, Uva, Central and Southern provinces and in Polonnaruwa district. Several spells of showers will occur in Anuradhapura district as well.  Showers or thundershowers will occur at several places elsewhere after 1.00 p.m.  Heavy showers above 100 mm are likely at some places in Eastern and Uva Provinces and in Hambantota district.

Winds will be north-easterly or easterly and wind speed will be (30-40) kmph. Wind speed may increase up to (50-60) kmph at times in the sea areas off the coasts extending from Colombo to Kankasanthurai via Puttalam and Mannar and from Pottuvil to Galle via Hambantota.

The sea areas off the coasts extending from Colombo to Kankasanthurai via Puttalam and Mannar and in Pottuvil to Galle via Hambantota can be rough at times but strong gusty winds and very rough seas can be expected during thundershowers.

The public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

Heat index at ‘Caution level’ in Northern, North-central, Eastern, North-western, Western provinces and Monaragala district today [09]

The Natural Hazards Early Warning Centre  of the Department of Meteorology has issued a Warm Weather Advisory for 09 April 2025

The public are warned that the Heat index, the temperature felt on human body is likely to increase up to ‘Caution level’ at some places in Northern, North-central, Eastern, North-western, and Western provinces and in Monaragala district.

The Heat Index Forecast is calculated by using relative humidity and maximum temperature and this is the condition that is felt on your body. This is not the forecast of maximum temperature. It is generated by the Department of Meteorology for the next day period and prepared by using global numerical weather prediction model data.

Effect of the heat index on human body is mentioned below is prepared on the advice of the Ministry of Health and Indigenous Medical Services.

ACTION REQUIRED

Job sites: Stay hydrated and takes breaks in the shade as often as possible.
Indoors: Check up on the elderly and the sick.
Vehicles: Never leave children unattended.
Outdoors: Limit strenuous outdoor activities, find shade and stay hydrated. Dress: Wear lightweight and white or light-colored clothing.

Misty conditions can be expected at some places in Sabaragamuwa, Central, Uva and Eastern provinces during the morning.

Showers may occur in the coastal areas of Western province and Puttalam district in the morning while showers or thundershowers will occur at times in Southern province. at several places in the other areas over the island during the afternoon or night. Fairly heavy rainfall of about 75 mm is likely at some places in Sabaragamuwa, Southern, Central, Uva and Eastern provinces.

The general public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.
