Heavy showers likely in Eastern and Uva Provinces and in Hambantota district

Rainy conditions are expected to be enhanced in the Northern, Eastern, Uva, Central, and Southern provinces today and tomorrow, and cloudy skies can be expected in most parts of the island.

Showers are likely in the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces during the morning  while showers will occur at times in Northern, Eastern, Uva, Central and Southern provinces and in Polonnaruwa district. Several spells of showers will occur in Anuradhapura district as well.  Showers or thundershowers will occur at several places elsewhere after 1.00 p.m.  Heavy showers above 100 mm are likely at some places in Eastern and Uva Provinces and in Hambantota district.

Winds will be north-easterly or easterly and wind speed will be (30-40) kmph. Wind speed may increase up to (50-60) kmph at times in the sea areas off the coasts extending from Colombo to Kankasanthurai via Puttalam and Mannar and from Pottuvil to Galle via Hambantota.

The sea areas off the coasts extending from Colombo to Kankasanthurai via Puttalam and Mannar and in Pottuvil to Galle via Hambantota can be rough at times but strong gusty winds and very rough seas can be expected during thundershowers.

The public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

Advisory for strong winds and rough seas  for Multi-day boats in the Bay of Bengal deep sea areas

Issued at 05.00 p.m. 18 September 2026, valid for the next 24 hours.

PLEASE BE AWARE!
The atmospheric disturbance to the North of the Andaman Islands in the Bay of Bengal, is likely to develop into a low pressure area within the next 24 hours.

Due to its influence, wind speed over the Bay of Bengal sea areas will increase during the next few days starting from
tomorrow (19th).

The wind speed in the sea areas marked under the “Advisory” category on the map below will increase to 55-65 kmph at times and those sea areas will be rough or very rough at times.

Navel and fishing communities engaging the activities over this sea area are advised to be vigilant and be attentive to the future forecasts and bulletins issued by the department of Meteorology in this regards.

Showery weather in the Southwestern parts of the island is likely to increase during the next few days starting from today (19th).

Showers will occur at times in the Western, Sabaragamuwa and North-western provinces and in Galle, Matara, Kandy and Nuwara-Eliya Districts.s Fairly heavy showers above 50 mm are likely at some places in the Sabaragamuwa province and in Kandy and Nuwara-Eliya districts.

Showers or thundershowers will occur at several places in the Uva province and in Mullaittivu, Batticaloa and Ampara districts after 2.00 p.m.

The general public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damage caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.
