High Commissioner of Sri Lanka to the United Kingdom, Rohitha Bogollagama, hosted a special reception at Sri Lanka House in London on 27 August 2024 for the Sri Lanka National Cricket Team, currently touring the United Kingdom for a much-anticipated Test match series, their first in England since 2016.
The evening’s reception attracted an array of distinguished guests, including key figures from the UK political sphere, members of the diplomatic community, corporate leaders, and cricket enthusiasts from both Britain and Sri Lanka. The gathering not only celebrated the team’s visit but also highlighted the deep-rooted affection for cricket shared by both nations.
In his address, High Commissioner Bogollagama reflected on Sri Lanka’s enduring relationship with cricket, tracing its roots back to the 1830s when the British introduced the sport to the island. He spoke passionately about how cricket has grown to become a national obsession in Sri Lanka, deeply embedded in the country’s cultural fabric.
“Cricket in Sri Lanka is more than just a sport,” the High Commissioner remarked, “it is a symbol of unity and solidarity, bringing our people together across generations and regions.” He extended his heartfelt best wishes to the Sri Lanka National Cricket Team as they continue their challenging tour of England.
Also addressing the gathering, Team Manager Mahinda Halangoda expressed his sincere gratitude to High Commissioner Bogollagama for hosting the reception. He reflected on the rich history of Sri Lankan cricket, noting its profound significance to the nation’s identity and heritage.
The Sri Lanka National Cricket Team’s tour of England includes three Test matches: the first, held from 21 to 25 August at Old Trafford in Manchester, followed by matches at Lord’s in London from 29 August to 2 September, and concluding at The Oval in London from 6 to 10 September.
