Ex-State Minister eats raw fish to prove his assertion

Former State Minister of Fisheries, Dilip Wedaarachchi yesterday ate raw fish, during a press conference in Colombo, in a bid to prove that fish eating did not cause the spread of COVID-19.

Addressing the media at the Opposition Leader’s Office, Wedaarachchi said that a lot of people had stopped eating fish now because of the Peliyagoda Fish Market COVID-19 cluster. The virus spread at the market through human interactions and not through fish, he maintained.

“A large number of people are employed in the fisheries sector. The best thing we can do to help them now is to eat more fish. Fishermen are already suffering greatly because of the closure of the fish market and the overall fall in consumption,” he said.

“The government, especially the Health Ministry must educate the people that one can’t contract fish by eating fish”. To prove his point Wedaarachchi consumed a piece of raw fish he had brought with him.
