BASL meets Speaker to discuss threats to judicial independence

The Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) has expressed its serious concerns to Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena over controversial declarations pertaining to judicial matters.
The meeting took place on 11 Sept., close on the heels of a section of the lawyers accusing President Ranil Wickremesinghe and Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena of undermining the independence of the judiciary.
The delegation was led by BASL President Kaushalya Nawaratne. The following is the text of BASL statement: “The Management Committee of the Bar Association held a constructive discussion with the Speaker to address concerns regarding the growing trend of judicial matters being deliberated, and references being made to judges in Parliament.
“In furtherance of this discussion, a formal letter outlining our concerns was handed over to the Speaker. The BASL, representing the legal fraternity of Sri Lanka, is committed to upholding the principles of an independent judiciary and the separation of powers. We recognize the importance of maintaining the integrity and impartiality of the judicial system, which serves as the cornerstone of a democratic society.
“During the meeting, the Management Committee of the BASL expressed its apprehensions regarding the potential implications of parliamentary discussions on ongoing judicial matters and statements made against judicial officers. We emphasized the need to preserve the sanctity of judicial proceedings and ensure that the due process is upheld without any undue influence. The BASL remains committed to engaging in a collaborative dialogue with relevant stakeholders to address these concerns and work towards safeguarding the independence of the judiciary. We firmly believe that maintaining a strong and independent judiciary is crucial for upholding justice, protecting the rule of law, and ensuring the rights of all citizens.”

President meets with senior officials of SriLankan Airlines

A meeting between President Anura Kumara Disanayake and senior officials of SriLankan Airlines was held this afternoon (April 8) at the Presidential Secretariat.
The discussions mainly focused on proposals to transform SriLankan Airlines into a more profitable state-owned enterprise. Special attention was also given to possible short-term and long-term solutions for the airline’s debt management.
The talks further explored new investment opportunities for the airline. The President instructed the officials to take all necessary steps to transform SriLankan Airlines into a profit-making entity.
Although the airline has recorded operational profits, due to past mismanagement and poor decision-making, it remains one of the leading loss-making state enterprises. The current government has decided to reverse the previous administration’s decision to privatize the airline. Instead, it plans to continue operating it as the national carrier while introducing a new management structure to ensure its profitability moving forward.
Minister of Labour and Deputy Minister of Economic Development Dr. Anil Jayantha Fernando, President’s Senior Advisor Duminda Hulangamuwa, Chairman of SriLankan Airlines Sarath Ganegoda along with several senior officials of SriLankan Airlines, were present at the meeting.
