Yevan David – A Sri Lankan hope for F1
On a cold February Winter morning in Valencia, Spain Yevan David representing his motherland was amongst finalists of the IAME Winter Cup 2020.
Reaching the finals in Europe is an achievement in itself, as only the top 36 drivers make it through. Yevan who started 7th of 36 drivers rocketed into 4th position in a phenomenal first lap making the experienced European Racing fraternity take note of the little Sri Lankan driver.
Yevan had his first taste of Karting at the SLKC Bandaragama before continuing with weekend practices in Singapore. He won the Asian Cadet (under 12) Championship in 2017 as he turned 10 and in 2018 he won the Asia Cup Cadet Title on home soil at the only internationally sanctioned kart race held in Sri Lanka.
In 2019 he moved onto the competitive Junior class finishing runner-up at the Rotax Max Asia Championship to win a ticket to represent Sri Lanka at the Rotax World Championships together with fellow Sri Lankan driver Eshan Pieris.
During the pandemic Yevan spent much time honing his skills on simulator racing finishing 3rd in the Semi Pro Class of ERacing GP organized by former Formula 1 driver Alex Yoong.
The next move for him is to compete full time in Europe in 2021 in Karts, prior to moving onto Formula 4.
Whether Yevan obtains the financial support to provide him the opportunity to reach F1 is a question but there is no doubt the strength, resilience and perseverance in his character provides him that extra Xfactor to WIN if given the chance.
Mikel Merino scored in the 88th minute from a rebound yielded by backup Belgium goalkeeper Senne Lammens, and Spain advanced to the World Cup semifinals with a 2-1 victory.
Merino was the late hero for the second straight match for Spain, who advanced to face tournament favourite France in the semifinals on Tuesday in Dallas.
Merino came on in the 86th minute and scored from his second touch of the match, charging into the box and pouncing after Lammens spilled a Pau Cubarsi shot from outside the area.
The Arsenal forward also scored as a substitute early in injury time to secure Spain’s 1-0 victory over Portugal in the last-16.
Lammens, the Manchester United keeper, was forced into the match in the 71st minute after longtime Belgium keeper Thibaut Courtois left with an apparent thigh injury.
Belgium desperately pressed for an equaliser in the final minutes, but Aymeric Laporte volleyed their best chance out of the box.
Fabian Ruiz scored the opening goal in the 30th minute for Spain after Courtois had parried a shot from Dani Olmo from Pedro Porro’s cut-back from the right of the area, but Belgium forward Charles De Ketelaere scored the first goal allowed by Spain in the entire World Cup in the 41st minute.
His header from Timothy Castagne’s cross from the right ended a record streak of 649 minutes without conceding at the World Cup.
