Tharanga, Weber headline stellar Lausanne javelin field
World leader Rumesh Tharanga and newly crowned European champion Julian Weber will headline a stellar field expected to produce one of the highlights of the Lausanne Diamond League 2026 on Friday.
It will be the first meeting this year between the Sri Lankan champion and the German thrower, from whom Tharanga took the world No. 1 ranking earlier this month.
Weber enters the spotlight after an impressive performance at the European Championships, where he crossed the 90-metre barrier and set the stage for what promises to be one of the most competitive javelin contests in recent memory.
The two athletes are the only throwers to have surpassed 90 metres this season. The contest will also bring together three recent world champions in Keshorn Walcott, Neeraj Chopra and Anderson Peters.
For Chopra, this will be his fourth appearance in Lausanne, a venue where he has enjoyed considerable success. The 28-year-old Indian won the event in 2022 with 89.08m and successfully defended his title in 2023 with 87.66m, before finishing runner-up in 2024 with 89.49m.
Returning to competition this season after a lengthy injury lay-off, Chopra heads to Switzerland following a Commonwealth Games silver medal in Glasgow, where he produced a season-best 85.83m. He finished behind Tharanga, who claimed Commonwealth Games gold with a throw of 89.75m.
The formidable entry list also features two-time world champion Anderson Peters, Olympic champion Keshorn Walcott, Jakub Vadlejch, Curtis Thompson and Simon Wieland.

Julian Webber
The star-studded lineup provides Tharanga with another opportunity to strengthen his position at the top of the world rankings.
Lausanne has traditionally been a venue capable of producing big distances, and Friday’s contest promises to be no different. With Weber carrying the momentum of his European Championship triumph and Tharanga arriving in world-leading form, the stage is set for a potentially historic battle.
With Diamond League points and valuable momentum at stake, none of the leading contenders is likely to hold back. Tharanga will be expected to set the benchmark early, while Weber, Chopra and the rest of the field will look to challenge deep into the competition.
All the ingredients are in place for a thrilling battle for the Lausanne crown—and potentially another huge night for the men’s javelin. (RF)

Ronaldo apologizes for Portugal walkout; says Jesus broke promise
Cristiano Ronaldo has accused Portugal coach Jorge Jesus of twice breaking his word, saying a failed agreement to publicly explain his omission against Norway drove him out of the camp, but insisting he remained available after any punishment.
In a lengthy statement, the 41-year-old gave his account of the dispute that prompted his departure from Copenhagen before Portugal’s Nations League match versus Denmark last week.
Ronaldo said Jesus had agreed a plan under which the forward would miss the Norway and Denmark matches to manage his fitness. However, on the day of the Norway game, the coach told him he would play for 30 minutes.
“Everyone knows the rest. I warmed up from halftime onwards, watched the minutes tick by and wasn’t called on,” Ronaldo said.
“The manager had broken his word to me.”
Portugal’s captain and all-time leading scorer said a subsequent meeting with Jesus, attended by his club side Al Nassr’s sporting director Simao Coutinho, produced an agreement for the coach to clarify events at his next news conference.
According to Ronaldo, an eight-point document was prepared saying he had never demanded playing time, had respected Jesus’s decisions and that the coach asking him to warm up without bringing him on had been a mistake.
Ronaldo said the agreed notes did not require Jesus to apologise to him but said the coach’s public remarks bore no resemblance to their private discussion.
“It was the second time he had broken his word to me,” Ronaldo said. “I decided to leave the training camp without waiting for any further broken promises.”
The statement provided Ronaldo’s account, but on Sunday, after Portugal’s win over Norway, Jesus denied he had made any agreement with the player, nevertheless leaving the door open for his return.
The Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) did not immediately respond to a request for comment about Ronaldo’s statement.
Ronaldo apologised for failing to greet supporters after the Norway match and for leaving his teammates, accepting that his captaincy made his conduct more serious.
“The consequences of my actions must be assessed and punished by the Portuguese Football Federation,” he said.
Despite the rupture, Ronaldo said he was not limiting his international ambitions to a farewell appearance.
“If I’m physically fit, playing for my club – scoring goals, I hope – after serving whatever suspension is imposed on me, I’ll be available, as I’ve always been until now, to compete and win for our national team,” he added.
