India seal 165 run win to take series lead

Sonal Dinusha yet again impressed in the first Test against India as he top scored in the second innings as Sri Lanka lost the game with a session to spare.

India wrapped up the first Test against Sri Lanka with a session to spare, completing a comprehensive 165-run victory in Galle yesterday.

Having set Sri Lanka a daunting target of 372, India claimed two wickets in the morning session after the hosts resumed on their overnight 84 for four before ruthlessly running through the tail after lunch to take a 1-0 lead in the two match series. Sri Lanka were bowled out for 206 in their second innings.

Left-arm spinner Manav Suthar was the architect of the victory, finishing with a six-wicket haul, his second in Test cricket, and completing a ten wicket match bag for the first time in his fledgling career.

Sri Lanka, however, did not go down without a fight. Captain Dhananjaya de Silva and first-innings centurion Sonal Dinusha provided stubborn resistance in the morning, battling for more than two hours and adding 95 runs for the fifth wicket.

De Silva, who had received a reprieve when dismissed off a no ball early in his innings, looked determined to make India pay and went on to post his 20th Test half-century.

The partnership was finally broken when de Silva attempted to sweep Ravindra Jadeja and was caught at short fine leg.

Wicketkeeper Niroshan Dickwella, who had made a half-century in the first innings, could not make an impact in the second essay as India tested his patience.

Dickwella fell for ten when he attempted to hit Prasidh Krishna over the slips. Cramped for room, he could only edge the ball through to the wicketkeeper.

It was Suthar who then turned Sri Lanka’s resistance into a rout. The left-arm spinner produced a triple wicket maiden immediately after lunch before returning in his next over to claim the final wicket of Keshara Nuwantha as Sri Lanka folded just 36 minutes after the interval.

The last four wickets tumbled for just seven runs, with Suthar claiming all four as India’s victory charge gathered unstoppable momentum.

Dinusha, meanwhile, produced another impressive effort despite receiving little support from the rest of the batting order. Playing only his fourth Test, the youngster once again displayed maturity beyond his experience, showing admirable application when India turned up the pressure.

A fine player of spin, Dinusha used nimble footwork to counter India’s slow bowlers before eventually falling when Dhruv Jurel held a bat pad catch at leg slip. His stubborn knock occupied 128 deliveries and contained eight fours and a six.

Apart from Suthar, India’s other standout performer was top-order batter Devdutt Padikkal, who made 167 in the first innings and followed it up with 44 in the second after coming into the side as a late injury replacement.

The teams now head to Colombo for the second and final Test, with India carrying both the series lead and considerable momentum.

Ronaldo apologizes for Portugal walkout; says Jesus broke promise

Cristiano Ronaldo is Portugal's leading scorer (Aljazeera)

Cristiano Ronaldo has accused Portugal ‌coach Jorge Jesus of twice breaking his word, saying a failed agreement to publicly explain his omission against Norway drove him out of the camp, but insisting he remained available after any punishment.

In a lengthy statement, the 41-year-old gave his account of the dispute that prompted his departure  from Copenhagen before Portugal’s Nations League match versus Denmark last week.

Ronaldo said Jesus had agreed a plan under which the forward would miss the Norway and Denmark matches to manage his fitness. However, on the day of the Norway game, the coach told him he would play for 30 minutes.

“Everyone knows the rest. I warmed up from halftime onwards, watched the minutes tick by and wasn’t called on,” Ronaldo said.

“The manager had broken his word to me.”

Portugal’s ‌captain and all-time leading scorer said a subsequent meeting with Jesus, attended by his club side Al Nassr’s sporting director Simao Coutinho, produced an agreement for the coach to clarify events at his next news conference.

According to Ronaldo, an eight-point document was prepared saying he had never demanded playing time, had respected Jesus’s decisions and that the coach asking him to warm up without bringing him on had been a mistake.

Ronaldo said the agreed notes did not require Jesus to apologise to him but said the coach’s public remarks bore no resemblance to their private discussion.

“It was the second time he had broken his word to me,” Ronaldo said. “I decided to leave the training camp without waiting for any further broken promises.”

The statement provided Ronaldo’s account, but on Sunday, after Portugal’s win over Norway, Jesus denied he had made any agreement with the player, nevertheless leaving the door open  for his return.

The Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) did not immediately respond to a request for comment about Ronaldo’s statement.

Ronaldo apologised for failing to greet supporters after the Norway match and for leaving his teammates,  accepting that his captaincy made his conduct more serious.

“The consequences of my actions must be assessed ‌and punished by the Portuguese Football Federation,” he said.

Despite the rupture, Ronaldo said he was not limiting his international ambitions to a farewell appearance.

“If I’m physically fit, playing for my club – scoring ‌goals, ‌I hope – after serving whatever suspension is imposed on me, I’ll be available, as I’ve always been until now, to compete and win for our national team,” he added.
