… asks why Solicitor General not promoted to that post

The SJB on Saturday called on President Ranil Wickremesinghe to appoint an Attorney General immediately.Addressing the media at the Opposition Leader’s office in Colombo, MP Chandima Weerakkody said that there were serious issues pertaining to additional solicitor generals and other attorneys-at-law of the Department of Attorney General appearing for cases countrywide while there was no Attorney General at office. “We have seen this issue on Friday in many courts.

These counsellors appear on behalf of the Attorney General. The question arises whether they could do so while there is no Attorney General at office. There is a question on prosecutions being done in the name of the Attorney General while there is literally no Attorney General,” Weerakkody, who is also an Attorney-at-Law said, adding that not even an Acting Attorney General has been named by the President.

He said that when the Attorney General post fell vacant, the Solicitor General was traditionally promoted to that office. “The incumbent Solicitor General Ayesha Jinasena has all the qualifications and an impeccable service record. The President should have at least named her as the Acting Attorney General because since last Friday, there has been no Attorney General in this country. There would be serious issues pertaining to the cases being heard in courts,” Weerakkody said.

He said that the President had tried to give a service extension to former Attorney General Sanjay Rajaratnam, whose term ended last Thursday. “The Constitutional Council rejected the President’s nomination twice. Now, the office of Attorney General is vacant. This amounts to a breach of Constitutional provisions, too. The President himself is an Attorney-at-Law and he knows that this is wrong. We demand that this matter be solved immediately,” Weerakkody said.
