President departs on official visit to Germany

President Anura Kumara Disanayake left the country on Tuesday (10) night from Bandaranaike International Airport on an official visit to the Federal Republic of Germany.
The visit, scheduled from June 11 to 13, 2025, is at the invitation of German President Mr, Frank-Walter Steinmeier.
During the visit, President Disanayake is expected to hold bilateral discussions with the President of Germany, the Chancellor, key Federal Ministers and other senior government leaders. These discussions will focus on strengthening cooperation between the two countries, particularly in priority areas such as trade, the digital economy, investment and vocational training opportunities.
President Disanayake will Chair a Business Forum, organised by the German Chamber of Commerce and Industry, where he will highlight Sri Lanka’s on-going economic transformation, emerging investment opportunities, growth potential and prospects for expanding bilateral trade relations.
In addition, the President is scheduled to meet with representatives from Germany’s Tourism and Travel Industry Associations as well as members of the Sri Lankan community residing in Germany.
President Anura Kumara Disanayake is accompanied by Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism, Vijitha Herath, along with a delegation of senior government officials.

Investigators search Air India crash site as Modi meets lone survivor

Investigators and rescue teams are searching the site of one of India’s worst aviation disasters, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi has met with the lone surviving passenger, a day after an Air India flight fell from the sky and killed 241 people on the plane and multiple people on the ground.
The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, en route from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick Airport with 242 people on board went down shortly after takeoff on Thursday, striking a medical college hostel in the western Indian city.

Airlines suspend flights and some countries close airspace after Israel launches attacks on Iran

Several airlines have suspended or cancelled flights in the Middle East and some countries have shut their airspace after Israel launched a wave of air strikes on Iran.
The Israeli attacks targeted military facilities, nuclear sites and residential areas, killing two senior military commanders and nuclear scientists.
Here is a list of suspended and rerouted flights:
- Emirates, the Middle East’s largest airline, said it had cancelled flights to and from Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon and Iran. Several flights scheduled for Friday and one Tehran flight on Saturday were listed as cancelled on the airline’s website.
- Qatar Airways, the country’s national carrier and one of the Middle East’s largest, said it had “temporarily cancelled flights to Iran and Iraq due to (the) current situation in the region”.
- El Al Airlines, an Israeli flag carrier, said it had suspended flights to and from Israel and was moving some of its planes out of the country.
- Israir, a budget Israeli carrier, said it was evacuating its planes from Tel Aviv airport, which it said was expected to remain closed through the weekend.
- Flydubai, or the Dubai Aviation Corporation, a budget carrier, said it had suspended flights to Amman, Beirut, Damascus, Iran and Israel and a number of other flights had been cancelled, rerouted or returned to their departure airports.
- Etihad Airways and Turkish Airlines diverted some flights to Baku, Azerbaijan, according to Heydar Aliyev International Airport.
- Pegasus Airlines, a Turkish carrier, has cancelled its flights to Iran until June 19 and flights to Iraq and Jordan until June 16. The company said in a statement that it will operate flights to Lebanon only during daylight hours.
- Lufthansa, the largest airline in Germany, has suspended all flights to and from Tehran. In a statement, the company added that it would also avoid “Iranian, Iraqi and Israeli airspace for now”.
- Air France, the country’s national carrier, has suspended flights to and from Tel Aviv “until further notice” following the closure of Israeli airspace.
- KLM, a Dutch airline in partnership with Air France, has cancelled all flights to Tel Aviv until at least July 1, reported Dutch news agency ANP.
- SWISS, which is owned by Lufthansa and is Switzerland’s national carrier, has suspended its Tel Aviv flights until October 25 while those to Beirut will be suspended until the end of July.
- LOT Polish Airlines announced it will not be using Iranian airspace for flights to Asia, a spokesperson told state news agency PAP.
- Wizz Air, a Hungarian budget airline, has suspended flights to Tel Aviv and re-routed flights affected by closed airspace in the region for the next 72 hours, it said in a statement through its Cyprus-based publicist.
- Air India, a flag carrier of the subcontinent which overflies Iran for its Europe and North American flights, said several flights were being diverted or returned to their origin, including ones from New York, Vancouver, Chicago and London.
- Aeroflot, Russia’s flagship airline, cancelled flights between Moscow and Tehran. In a statement, the airline said that flights to Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Doha and the Maldives have been rerouted through Pakistani airspace.

Amal Niroshan Attanayake appointed Chairman Sri Lanka Thriposha Limited

Amal Niroshan Attanayake, a highly experienced business professional with both local and international experience, has been appointed the new Chairman of Sri Lanka Thriposha Limited by the Ministry of Health and Mass Media.
The official letter of appointment was presented to Mr Attanayake on Friday (13) by the Minister of Health and Mass Media, Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa, at the Ministry premises.
Mr. Attanayake, an alumnus of Dharmaraja College, Kandy, brings over 25 years of high-level experience in local and international business fields. During his school years, he served as a President’s Scout and later graduated with honours from the University of Sri Jayewardenepura. He has also served as the Secretary of the University Sports Association and represented Sri Lanka in international tennis tournaments.
In addition to creating a number of local and international brands, Attanayake has organised and managed several international exhibitions in South Asia and Sri Lanka. He also has extensive expertise in modern technology and digitalisation.
