Women politicians visit Parliament in empowering initiative
Women need to play a more decisive role in governance and politics in Sri Lanka if it is to develop in a manner that improves the lives of all people, said Ms. Visaka Dharmadasa, Founder and Chair of the Association of War Affected Women (AWAW) at a meeting with officials in Parliament.
Text of the statement issued by the National Peace Council: “A group of 47 women leaders, representing every district in Sri Lanka, visited the Parliament Complex for an awareness programme recently. Ms Dharmadasa noted that this timely visit took place at a time when Sri Lanka urgently needs more diverse and representative leadership and initiatives like these are vital.
The event was a highlight of the “Active Citizens for Elections and Democracy” (ACED) project, funded by the European Union and implemented by the National Peace Council (NPC), in partnership with PAFFREL, AWAW, Centre for Communication Training (CCT), and Women & Democracy (W&D) in Sri Lanka and the Maldives. This initiative aimed to give women politicians encouragement and inspiration in their political journeys, offering them a rare opportunity to learn firsthand about parliamentary processes and deepen their understanding of governance systems.
The keynote address on “Women’s Representation in Politics and the Role of Parliament” was delivered by Mr. Chaminda Kularatne, Chief of Staff and Deputy Secretary General of Parliament. He offered both historical context and contemporary analysis. This was followed by a presentation by Mr. M. Jayalath Perera, Director (Legislative Services) and Acting Director (Communication), who explained the Committee System of Parliament, highlighting avenues through which MPs and women in particular can influence policy, oversight, and legislation beyond floor debates.
The participants expressed deep appreciation for the knowledge and inspiration gained. They noted that this visit to Parliament marked more than just a symbolic step for the women leaders, it was a real and practical boost to their capacities and confidence. Also in attendance were Rohana Hettiarachchchi, Executive Director of PAFFREL, and NPC Project Manager Ben Perinpanayagam, and members of the NPC and AWAW teams, who support the strengthening of democratic institutions and inclusive political participation across the country. The organisers hope it will serve as a catalyst for more women to step forward, work collaboratively, and navigate the political landscape with resilience and purpose.”
