Thamil Makkal Thesiya Kuttani (TMTK) leader, C.V. Wigneswaran on 28 October criticised the Presidential Task Force for One Country, One Law pointing that not a single Tamil person was on it.

He also said that the Task Force was chaired by Bodu Bala Sena (BBS) General Secretary Ven. Galagodaatte Gnanasara Thera, a divisive figure.

“It seems that this is yet another attempt to undermine the Tamil people and to make them voiceless. The government also wants to pander to the worst elements among the Sinhala Buddhists,” Wigneswaran said.

The MP said that Sri Lanka did not have one law because it was implemented differently depending on one’s social status. Even Gnanasara Thera had received special treatment.

“Given this, there is no point in talking about one law. I don’t understand the purpose of this Task Force and I don’t think most Sri Lankans either,” he said.

Wigneswaran added that there had been many occasions in the past when Sri Lanka was not one country. Different people had also followed different laws. For example, sections of the Tamils are governed by Thesavalamai law, he said.

“The government came into power with the help of Sinhala Buddhists. It is trying to please them at the expense of the minorities,” he said.
