Issued at 05.30 a.m. on 02 January 2026 by the Department of Meteorology 

Misty conditions can be expected at some places in the Sabaragamuwa and Central provinces and in Galle and Matara districts during the early hours of the morning.

Showery condition is expected to enhance in the Eastern, Northern and Uva provinces during the coming days, due to the development of a low-level atmospheric disturbance to the East of Sri Lanka.

Showers will occur at times in the Eastern, Central,  Northern, North-central and Uva provinces and in Hambantota district. Fairly heavy showers above 75 mm are likely at some places in the Central and Uva provinces and in Batticaloa and Ampara districts.

Showers or thundershowers may occur at several places elsewhere after 2.00 p.m. Fairly heavy showers above 50 mm are likely at some places in these areas. A few showers may occur in the coastal areas of  the North-western and Western provinces and in Galle and Matara districts.

The general public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

Advisory for Severe Lightning Issued by the Natural Hazards Early Warning Centre at 11.30 a.m. 14 February 2026 valid for the period until 11.30 p.m. 14 February 2026

Thundershowers accompanied with severe lightning are likely to occur at some places in the Western, Sabaragamuwa and Southern provinces and in Badulla and Nuwara-Eliya districts after 1.00 p.m.  There may be temporary localized strong winds during thundershowers.

The General public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by lightning activity.

ACTION REQUIRED:

The Department of Meteorology advises that people should:
 Seek shelter, preferably indoors and never under trees.
 Avoid open areas such as paddy fields, tea plantations and open water bodies during thunderstorms.
 Avoid using wired telephones and connected electric appliances during thunderstorms.
 Avoid using open vehicles, such as bicycles, tractors and boats etc.
 Beware of fallen trees and power lines.
 For emergency assistance contact the local disaster management authorities.

Misty conditions can be expected at some places in the Western, Sabaragamuwa and Central provinces and in Galle and Matara districts during the early hours of the morning.

Showers will occur at times in the Central, Uva, Eastern and Northern provinces and in Polonnaruwa and Hambantota districts. Fairly heavy showers above 75 mm are likely at some places in the Uva and Central provinces and in Ampara, Batticaloa and Polonnaruwa districts. Several spells of showers will occur in Anuradhapura district. Showers or thundershowers will occur at several places elsewhere after 1.00 p.m. and fairly heavy showers about 75 mm are likely at some places.

The general public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.
