Repeal PTA and release arrested students– Harini

JVP-led NPP MP Dr Harini Amarasuriya says that the government should repeal the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA) and to immediately release the Aragalaya activists detained under the PTA provisions.  She said that three student activists including the convener of the Inter University Students Federation Wasantha Mudalige were detained under the PTA without them being produced in court as there was no evidence against them.

“The police took into custody many Aragalaya activists on several earlier occasions. They were released by the court as there was no evidence against them. The police know that these three leaders too would get bail if they are produced before the courts as there are no evidence against them. We urge the government to release the detained student activists,” she said.

Dr Amarasuriya said that it was surprising that President Ranil Wickremesinghe, who advocated to repeal the PTA during the Yahapalana Government, is now using the same Act to take revenge.  “This is an anti-democratic and anti-human Act. It should be repealed immediately.”

“President Wickremesinghe, appointed by Pro-Rajapaksa elements, is continuously repressing the people. Instead of attempting to resolve the many issues faced by the country today, Wickremesinghe is keener on instilling fear in the people who are asking for solutions and relief. He is protecting the Rajapaksas. He is repressing even peaceful protests while appearing to be liberal and democratic,” she said.

“The people have a right to drive out this Government that has no mandate. The JVP along with the National People’s Power is ready to lead the effort. The party will commence a wave of protests calling for the current Government to step down. The Government must be shown the power of the people and be forced to dissolve the current Parliament, allowing the people to choose a Government of their choice,” Dr Amarasuriya said.
