Ranil challenges Sajith and Anura to a debate on IMF programme
President Ranil Wickremesinghe yesterday challenged the SJB and the NPP presidential candidates to a debate on the IMF bailout package for Sri Lanka.
Addressing a special UNP Convention held at the party headquarters, Sirikotha, Wickremesinghe called on Opposition and SJB leader Sajith Premadasa and JVP/NPP leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake to stop misleading the public as regards the IMF programme in Sri Lanka.
“We can participate in an open virtual discussion with the IMF so that they can explain their positions related to the ongoing IMF assistance to the country. This will allow people to know the truth,” the President said.
Earlier in the day, the UNP Convention passed a resolution supporting Wickremesinghe’s candidacy in the September 21 election. Wickremesinghe is contesting the election as an independent candidate under a different party symbol, not the UNP’s elephant symbol.
The National Peoples Power [NPP] secured 15 seats to win the 27 member Badulla Municipal Council. The Samagi Jana Balawegaya were second securing six seats.
The Samagi Jana Balawegaya [SJB] secured 11 seats while the National Peoples Power [NPP] secured 10 seats in the 29 member Gampola Urban Council.
The Sri Lanka Muslim Congress secured seven seats in the 17 member Eravur Urban Council while the United National Party [UNP] were second securing four seats.
