Rains to intensify within next few days

The rainy weather over the south-western parts of the country is expected to increase within the next few days.
The Met Department said yesterday that showers would occur at times in Sabaragamuwa, Western, Central and North-Western provinces and in Galle and Matara districts.
Heavy rainfalls above 100 mm are likely at some places in Sabaragamuwa and Central provinces and in Galle, Matara and Kalutara districts.
The Met Department has issued a weather advisory for naval communities operating in sea areas extending from Kankesanturai to Hambantota via Mannar, Colombo and Galle.
There is also a high possibility of increased wind speed up to (60-70) kmph in the sea area off the coast extending from Kankesanturai to Hambantota via Mannar, Colombo and Galle. Sea areas can be very rough at times, the advisory reads.
The Met Department has advised fishermen not to venture into the above mentioned sea areas while urging the naval communities to be vigilant about heavy rain and winds. There is a possibility that near shore sea areas off the coast, extending from
Beruwala to Hambantota via Galle may experience surges due to the effect of swell waves, having 2.0 – 2.5m height this is not the height of nearshore waves, it said.
