PM: Protesters won’t be dealt with under PTA

Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena yesterday (31) assured Parliament that those arrested on Tuesday (27) during the protest launched by the Inter University Students’ Federation (IUSF) wouldn’t be dealt with in terms of the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA).
This assurance was given in Parliament after the SJB leader Sajith Premadasa raised the issue. The IUSF launched the protest, demanding the immediate release of three persons, including a Buddhist monk held under the PTA.
Premier Gunawardena has stressed that the government was determined to ensure the rights of all and not just selected individuals.
The Maligakanda Magistrate yesterday granted bail to 28 protesters produced before him pending investigations into the previous day’s incidents in the Maradana police area (SF)
