PC approves nominees for SC and CA

The Parliamentary Council established under the 20th Amendment at its first ever meeting yesterday approved six nominees for the Supreme Court and one nominee for the Appeal Court judge, according to sources.
The meeting began around 4 pm, chaired by Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena, at the official residence of the Speaker.
The appointment of Supreme Court judges was discussed at the meeting and the names that had been sent to the council had been considered on the grounds of merit and experience, sources said.
The Parliamentary Council, comprises Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa, Prime Minister’s nominee Minister Douglas
Devananda and Opposition Leader’s nominee MP Kabir Hashim.
The Parliamentary Council, established under the 20th Amendment, has replaced the Constitutional Council set up under the 19th Amendment.
