Only meaningful devolution will help usher in development – CVV
Development would continue to elude Sri Lankan until state power was meaningfully devolved to the provinces, Tamil People’s National Alliance (TPNA) Leader, C. V. Vigneswaran said on Wednesday night.
Addressing the media in Jaffna on his party’s constitutional proposals, Vigneswaran said that as things stood, the power was centralised in Sri Lanka, and it was impossible to find solutions to the problems the provinces were faced with.
“Sri Lankan economy is stagnant. Economic growth has dropped because Sri Lanka has become an authoritarian state. We need to devolve power to the provinces and the government must seriously look into this. Our constitutional proposals are based on this.”
The TPNA leader said that when the occasion demanded it, leaders of the country called it a pluralistic, multi ethnic and multicultural country. But the reality is far from it. “The rights of those in the periphery are being suppressed,” he said.
