Snehith Reddy slammed an unbeaten 147 off 125 balls, the highest score of the 2024 Under-19 World Cup so far, as New Zealand began their campaign with a comfortable win over Nepal in East London.

Reddy, who turned 17 last November, hit 11 fours and six sixes during his knock. Captain Oscar Jackson gave Reddy good company, contributing 75 in a 157-run partnership for the fourth wicket. The stand, however, ended in the 42nd over when Jackson was bowled by Aakash Tripathi. Lachlan Stackpole and Zac Cumming then fell for ducks, but Reddy’s knock took New Zealand past 300.

In response, Nepal had a shaky start with Deepak Bohara being dismissed in the first over for a duck. Arjun Kumal the other opener, led Nepal’s fight with 90 off 104 balls, including 12 fours, but he lacked support from the other end – the next-best score in Nepal’s chase was captain Dev Khanal’s 36 off 34 balls. Jackson was impressive with the ball as well, returning 2 for 25 in his seven overs. Mason Clarke was the pick of the bowlers for New Zealand, taking 3 for 25 in ,his eight overs.

At 176 for 8 in the 38th over, and 201 for 9 in the 44th, Nepal were in danger of being bowled out, but the tail frustrated New Zealand and helped their team bat out full 50 overs.

“To get off this competition with a win is something we were trying to do,” Jackson said after the game. “It’s very exciting to be one from one and looking forward to the next game. “Being three down for 50-60, it was never ideal. It was just a reassessment phase in the middle, just acknowledging it was tough and just working around that. I think the way we set up the back end of the innings is our strength and owning the middle period was important for us.”

Brief scores:
New Zealand Under-19 302 for 8 in 50 overs (Snehith Reddy 147*, Oscar Jackson 75, Tom Jones 33; Gulsan Jha 2-61, Subash Bhandari 3-60) beat Nepal Under-19 238 for 9 in 50 overs (Arjun Kumal 90, Dev Khanal 36, Subash Bhandari 33*; Mason Clarke 3-25, Ewald Schreuder 2-54, Oscar Jackson 2-25) by 64 runs

Dinura Kalupahana followed up his punchy half-century with a top-order wicket to help Sri Lanka trump Zimbabwe in a rain-hit fixture in Kimberley. Chasing a DLS-adjusted target of 129 in 22 overs, Zimbabwe were bowled out for 89 in 21.2 overs.

Zimbabwe had dominated the early exchanges, reducing Sri Lanka to 88 for 5 in 31 overs. Kalupahana and wicketkeeper-batter Sharujan Shanmuganathan a prodigy, then counterattacked to help their side regain some lost ground. They added 80 off only 71 balls for the sixth wicket to give Sri Lanka’s bowlers something to bowl at.

Kalupahana wasn’t done yet. He took the new ball and removed Zimbabwe’s No.3 Panashe Taruvinga for 8. Legspinner Malsha Tharupathi damaged Zimbabwe’s chase even further with 4 for 17 in his four overs. Captain Mathew Schonken was the only Zimbabwe batter to pass 25.

Brief scores:
Sri Lanka Under-19 204 in 48.3 overs (Ravishan de Silva 31, Rusanda Gamage 31, Dinura Kalupahana 60, Sharujan Shammuganathan 41*; Kohl Eksteen 3-40, Newman Nyamhuri 2-50) beat  Zimbabwe Under-19 89 in 21.1 overs (Mathew Schonken 27; MalshaTharupathi 4-17, Vishwa Lahiru 2-12, Ruvishan Perera 2-02) by 39 runs (via DLS method)

Messi scores again but Argentina given World Cup upset fright by Cape Verde

Argentina's Lionel Messi celebrates scoring their first goal (Aljazeera)

Reigning champions Argentina needed an extra-time own goal to overcome a Cape Verde side with incredible levels of resilience 3-2  in a thrilling contest and secure their spot in the last 16 of the World Cup.

The Africans, playing in their first World Cup, had twice come from a goal down on Friday to silence the vast majority of the crowd of 64,478 packed into a hot and humid Miami Stadium.

Six minutes into the second period of extra time, Lionel Messi swung a corner into the box, and Cristian Romero rose to head home off the arm of Cape Verde centre-back Diney Borges and finally set up a date with Egypt in Atlanta next Tuesday.

Messi had, almost inevitably, given Argentina the lead in the 29th minute with his seventh goal of the tournament, but Deroy Duarte equalised just before the hour mark.

The Blue Sharks held on to send the match into an additional half hour before Lisandro Martinez lashed a sumptuous shot into the roof of the net in the second minute of the first period of extra time to put Argentina ahead again.

Cape ‌Verde were not done yet, however, and left back Sidny Lopes Cabral curled a beautiful shot into the top corner of the net in the 103rd minute of the contest to put the scores back on level terms at 2-2.

Lopes Cabral could have equalised again after Romero’s goal, but his finely struck free kick was saved by Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez, who had to be at his best to deny Cape Verde in the dying minutes.

Cape Verde were beaten but far from outclassed by the three-times world champions as they put in a fourth magnificent display of teamwork and grit at their first World Cup.

The only one of the four World Cup debutants to make it to the last 32 and ranked 67th in the world coming into the tournament, Cape Verde had hoped to frustrate Argentina as they did Spain, Uruguay and Saudi Arabia in group-stage draws.

They succeeded, while showing no shortage of quality of their own, for much of the game with a never-say-die desperation and a neat pass-and-move game.

Messi aside, Argentina were largely bereft of ideas against an obdurate defence and Cape Verde libero Kevin Pina was the most impressive player on the park for long periods of the contest.

It was Argentina who made the breakthrough in the 29th minute, however, when Lisandro Martinez lofted a long ball over the top of the defence to the feet of Messi.

The 39-year-old maestro took a touch with the outside of his left boot and buried it in the roof of Vozinha’s net for his 20th goal over six editions of football’s global showpiece.

Cape Verde knew they would need to score to keep their World Cup campaign alive and Duarte fired a shot at goal soon after half-time that drew a diving save out of Martinez.

Just before the hour mark, captain Ryan Mendes was freed down the right, and his pass into the box found the Dutch-born midfielder, ‌who controlled the ball with his left foot before drilling it past Martinez with his right.

Messi had a chance to put Argentina back in front four minutes later when he was played through on goal, but Vozinha stood up well to keep his shot out of the net.

One of Messi’s trademark ‌free ‌kicks was tipped away by Vozinha in the 72nd minute, and Cape Verde defender Pico Lopes had to intervene to prevent Enzo Fernandez from scoring 10 minutes later.

Cape Verde held on to force the dramatic period of extra time, and they will now return home heroes having put their tiny island-nation firmly on the footballing map.

Ukrainian suspect hunted by police after Monaco bomb attack was ‘disguised as a man’

Interpol released an image of 39-year-old Anastasiia Berezovska

A Ukrainian woman identified as the main suspect for a parcel bombing in Monaco was “disguised as a man”, according to the city-state’s deputy prosecutor.

Anastasiia Berezovska, 39, is suspected of leaving a package in the entrance hall of an apartment building, before fleeing the scene on foot and then driving to Germany.

A sanctioned Ukrainian multi-millionaire, his partner and 13-year-old son are the reported victims of the attack, which left them seriously injured.

An Interpol Red Notice has been issued for Berezovska, who speaks German and is wanted for attempted murder, placing an explosive device on a public road with criminal intent, and criminal conspiracy.

A package was left at the property just before 21:00 local time (20:00 BST) on Monday, followed by an explosion shortly afterwards.

Monaco’s deputy prosecutor Morgan Raymond said investigators were also looking for possible accomplices as they continue to search for the suspect.

The explosion happened just as the three residents were entering the building on Monday evening.

Authorities in Monaco have not confirmed the victims’ identifies but according to local reports, the attack targeted Vadym Yermolaiev, his partner and his son.  Yermolaiev, 58, is a wealthy real estate developer, who has been living in Monaco.

Officials believe Berezovska had spent some days casing out the residence.

Raymond said the suspect, pictured on CCTV cameras wearing a dark bucket hat, left the scene on foot after depositing the parcel but is then believed to have picked up a hire car and driven to Italy and on to Germany.

Photos of Berezovska released by Interpol show a woman with dark shoulder-length hair. She has a tattoo on her right arm which “possibly” depicts a snake, according to officers.

Interpol is not a police force itself, but helps forces across the world to co-operate. A Red Notice is an alert to all of its 196 member countries, asking them to locate and arrest a person.

Monaco’s public prosecutor Stephane Thibault thanked police from Monaco and France for their co-operation which made it possible “to identify, in a particularly short time, the person suspected of having carried out the attack”.

Meanwhile police in the state of Hesse, Germany, confirmed in a statement that special forces had searched the rented apartment of a 39-year-old Ukrainian woman in the Main-Taunus district on Thursday.

A vehicle she used was also searched and seized.

“Evidence has been secured and will be handed over to the Monegasque authorities. The Hessian security authorities are supporting the Monegasque authorities in their investigations and are in close contact with them,” the statement said.

“The woman being sought is currently on the run. An international arrest warrant has been issued.”

Prince Albert II of Monaco has described the incident as a “heinous crime”.

The principality of Monaco is located in the southeast of France on the Mediterranean coast, around 15km (10 miles) to the east of Nice. The map also labels the French commune (town) of Beausoleil which lies across the border from Monaco.

Authorities in Monaco have confirmed the three victims were treated in hospital.  The adults were seriously wounded and taken to the Nice University Hospital (CHU), while the child, who suffered minor injuries, was admitted in a non-critical condition to the Lenval children’s hospital in Nice.

On Wednesday, the man was no longer in a life-or-death situation, but the woman’s condition had not yet stabilised, AFP news agency reported.

Yermolaiev, widely believed to be the presumed target of the blast, is a Cypriot citizen after renouncing his Ukrainian citizenship in 2019.

He has big interests in the wine and alcohol business in Russian-annexed Crimea, and since 2023 has been the subject of sanctions imposed by the government in Kyiv.

He was named the 39th richest Ukrainian by Forbes magazine in 2020, with a fortune of $230m (£173.8m).

A progress review meeting on the implementation of the circular issued to address the prevailing dengue epidemic threat was held this afternoon (03) at the Presidential Secretariat under the chairmanship of Secretary to the President Dr Nandika Sanath Kumanayake.

The discussion examined the progress of programmes implemented by all State institutions in accordance with the circular issued on 23 June 2026 on dengue prevention, as well as measures taken thus far to control the current dengue situation and the plans and strategies to be pursued in the future.

Attention was also focused on sustainable solutions that could be adopted through greater coordination among all State institutions to prevent the spread of dengue in high-risk areas, while discussions were held on further intensifying fumigation activities in such locations.

Pointing out that high-risk areas could only be freed from dengue through innovative approaches that move beyond conventional methods, the President’s Secretary stressed that controlling the disease could not be achieved by the Government alone and that the public also bore a significant responsibility in this regard.

The importance of strengthening the contribution of Public Health Inspectors, continuing household cleaning initiatives on a sustained basis, and implementing programmes based on accurate data to eliminate high-risk zones was also emphasised.

Those present at the meeting included Chief of Staff to the President Prabath Chandrakeerthi; Secretary to the Ministry of Health and Mass Media Dr Anil Jasinghe; Senior Additional Secretary to the President Russell Aponsu; Additional Secretary to the President (Clean Sri Lanka) Engineer S.
