Ambagamuwa Central hurdler Ayomal Akalanka capped the five-day All Island Schools Games Athletics Championship with a new national junior record to bag the best athlete title in the boys’ category at the Sugathadasa Stadium on Tuesday.

The athlete trained by veteran coach Anura Bandara clocked 51.16 seconds to break his own 400 metres hurdles record (51.26) established at the National Championships. In the girls’ category Nannapurawa MV Bibila athlete Madushani Herath was adjudged the best athlete of the meet for her outstanding performance in the Under 20 long jump (6.19m). She concluded her remarkable schools carrier winning the Under 20 triple jump title (12.49m) on the final day.

Maris Stella College, Negombo and Lyceum International Wattala bagged the overall boys’ and girls’ titles after strong contenders St. Joseph Vaz’s College, Wennappuwa were penalized and part of the points they earned were deducted for violating procedure of fielding newly admitted athletes at the All Island Schools Games Athletics Championship.

The final day commenced with authorities announcing a deduction of 41 points from the track and field stronghold of North Western Province. It is learnt that the authorities of St. Joseph Vaz’s College had received the blessings of the director of sports of North Western Province to field athletes who had joined the school after their OL exams.

Those athletes were allowed to compete in the meet but the school was not awarded points for their performances.

While Lyceum Wattala were the champions in the girls’ category, Ratnayake Central settled for the runner up position.

Galle secure NSL title

Galle captain Ramesh Mendis receives the championship trophy from SLC Secretary Bandula Dissanayake after his side won the First Class title at SSC yesterday.

Galle secured the country’s premier First Class cricket title – National Super League (NSL) – when they overcame Dambulla on first innings points in the final that concluded at SSC yesterday.

Galle and Dambulla qualified for the final after topping the points table in the league stage and Galle were declared champions after their first innings victory.

Put into bat first, Galle posted 370 thanks to a hundred by Oshada Fernando and Dinesh Chandimal (80) as they shared an 118 run stand for the second wicket. Quick Mohammad Shiraz was the pick of the bowlers finishing with six wickets.

Wicketkeeper Vishad Randkia held Dambulla’s innings together posting a hundred after opener Ron Chandgraguptha had hit 65. Dambulla were bowled out for 313 with Nimsara Atharagalla picking up five wickets.

The fact that Dambulla ended up with a first innings deficit meant that they had to win the game outright to clinch the title.

All what Galle had to do was to bat out time with a bit of bad weather around the corner and that’s exactly what they did to secure the title.

They posted 246 for five with Dinesh Chandimal scoring another half-century in the second innings.

At 162 for five, Dambulla still had an outside chance but Dunith Wellalage and Ramesh Mendis posted unbeaten half-centuries to ensure the title was theirs.

Ramesh Mendis finished as the second highest leading run scorer in the competition with 454 runs followed by Chandimal with 453 runs.
