Jaffna District Independent MP Dr Ramanaathan Archunan on Wednesday (19) extended an apology on behalf of the Northern people for the LTTE’s bombing of the Temple of the Tooth.

Speaking in Parliament, Archunan stated that he was only seven years old at the time of the attack but, as an MP representing the North, felt it was his responsibility to apologise for the actions of the LTTE, which had originated from the region.

Dr. Archunan emphasised that rather than focusing on the atrocities in the past, it was essential for the country to move forward as a united nation. He also highlighted the significant challenges and hardships faced by the people of the North during the war.

Archunan expressed his gratitude to the government for allocating Rs. 100 million in this year’s budget for the Jaffna Library.

SJB MP Kabir Hashim questioned whether the apology was being made on behalf of the JVP or the Tamil people. In response, Archunan said that he was apologising on behalf of the Northern people.

He further stated that approximately 55,000 LTTE cadres had been recruited from the region.
