High possibility of major flooding of low lying areas of Maha Oya basin – Irrigation Department

Areas that may be flooded in Maha Oya basin

Flood warning issued on 20th November 2023 by the Irrigation Department’s  Hydrology and Disaster Management Division

The Irrigation Department’s Hydrology and Disaster Management Division  has warned that as very high rainfall has occurred  upstream and the middle reach catchment areas of the Maha Oya basin and by analyzing the current river water level received from Hydrology stations in Maha Oya,  that there is a high possibility of  a major flood situation occurring in low lying areas of the Maha Oya valley in  Alawwa, Diwulapitiya, Meerigama, Pannala, Wennappuwa, Negambo, Katana, Narammala and Dankotuwa Divisional Secretaries  Divisions.

Residents of the area and drivers of vehicles running through the above areas are requested to pay high attention in this regards in order to save valuable lives and public and private property. The Disaster Management Authorities and District / Divisional Administrations are requested to take necessary precautions in this regard.

Pope Leo prays at tomb of Francis ahead of first Sunday address

Pope Leo XIV will give his first Sunday blessing and address to a crowd in St Peter’s Square in the Vatican today.

He will recite the Regina Caeli prayer, in honour of the Virgin Mary, in his first public address since his election was announced with white smoke on Thursday.

After delivering Sunday mass, Pope Leo will bless those gathered on the square outside – and deliver his reflections.

On Saturday, he visited a shrine outside Rome and then prayed before the tomb of his late predecessor Francis inside the basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore.

Pope Leo will be formally inaugurated at a mass in St Peter’s Square next week on 18 May.
