Heavy showers likely at some places in Western, Sabaragamuwa, Southern, Central and Uva provinces

Misty conditions can be expected at some places in Western, Sabaragamuwa and Central provinces during the morning.

Showers or thundershowers will occur at times in Uva and Southern province and in Ampara, and Batticaloa districts while several spells of showers will occur in Northern and North-Central provinces and in Trincomalee district. Showers or thundershowers may occur at several places elsewhere of the island after 2.00 p.m.

Heavy showers about 100 mm are likely at some places in Western, Sabaragamuwa, Southern, Central and Uva provinces.

Winds will be north-easterly and wind speed will be (25-35) kmph. Fairly strong winds about (30-35) kmph can be expected at times in Northern, North-Western and Uva provinces and in Hambantota district.  Wind speed may increase up to (40-50) kmph at times in the sea areas off the coasts extending from Colombo to Kankasanthurai via Puttalam and Mannar and from Pottuvil to Galle via Hambantota.

The sea areas off the coasts extending from Colombo to Kankasanthurai via Puttalam and Mannar and from Pottuvil to Galle via Hambantota will be fairly rough at times. The other sea areas around the island will be moderate but  strong gusty winds and very rough seas can be expected during thundershowers.

The public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

The Intertropical Convergence Zone (where winds from the Northern Hemisphere and Southern Hemisphere converge) affects the island’s weather.

Misty conditions can be expected at some places in Central and Uva provinces and in Ampara district during the morning.

Several spells of showers may occur in coastal areas of the Western province and in Puttalam, Mannar, Galle and Matara districts in the morning while showers or thundershowers will occur at most places of the island during the afternoon or night. Fairly heavy rain fall about 75 mm is likely at some places in Central, Uva and Eastern provinces and in Vavuniya and Polonnaruwa districts.

The general public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

The public are warned that the Heat index, the temperature felt on human body is likely to increase up to ‘Caution level’ at some places in Northern, North-central and Eastern provinces and Monaragala, Hambantota districts

The Heat Index Forecast is calculated by using relative humidity and maximum temperature and this is the condition that is felt on your body. This is not the forecast of maximum temperature. It is generated by the Department of Meteorology for the next day period and prepared by using global numerical weather prediction model data.

Effect of the heat index on human body is mentioned in the above table and it is prepared on the advice of the Ministry of Health and Indigenous Medical Services.

ACTION REQUIRED

Job sites: Stay hydrated and takes breaks in the shade as often as possible.
Indoors: Check up on the elderly and the sick.
Vehicles: Never leave children unattended.
Outdoors: Limit strenuous outdoor activities, find shade and stay hydrated. Dress: Wear lightweight and white or light-colored clothing.
