Heavy showers above 100 mm are likely at some places in Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, Southern, Northern and North-central provinces

Weather forecast issued at 05.30 a.m. on 12 August 2024 by the Department of Meteorology

Atmospheric conditions are favorable for development of evening thundershowers in the island during the next few days.

Showers or thundershowers will occur at most places in the island during the evening or night. While a few Showers may occur in Kaluthara, Galle, Matara and Rathnapura districts during the morning too.

Heavy showers above 100 mm are likely at some places in Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, Southern, Northern and North-central provinces.

Winds will be westerly to south-westerly and wind speed will be (30-40) kmph and  can increase up to 50 kmph at times in the sea areas off the coasts extending from  Galle to Batticaloa via Matara, Hambantota and Pottuvil

The sea areas off the coasts extending from Galle to Batticaloa via Matara, Hambantota and Pottuvil may be fairly rough at times. Strong gusty winds and very rough seas can be expected during thundershowers.

General public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

Issued at 05.30 a.m. on 29 August 2026 by the Department of Meteorology

Showers will occur at times in the Western and Sabaragamuwa, provinces and in Galle, Matara, Kandy and Nuwara-Eliya districts. Several spells of showers will occur in the North-western province.

Showers or thundershowers may occur at  a few places in the Uva province and in Ampara, Batticaloa and Hambantota districts after 2.00 p.m. Dry weather will prevail over the other areas of the island.

Strong winds of about (40-50) kmph can be expected at times over the  Western slopes of the Central hills, the Northern, North-central and North-western provinces and in Trincomalee, Monaragala, Hambantota and Matale districts.

The general public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damage caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.
