Heavy showers about 100mm are likely at some places in Central, Sabaragamuwa, Eastern and Southern provinces

A low-pressure area is likely to form southeast Bay of Bengal today, 15th of December. It is likely become a well-marked low pressure and move west-northwestwards towards the Tamil Nadu coast, close to North of Sri Lanka during the next two days. The general public, particularly living in the Eastern and Northern provinces are requested to be attentive to the future forecasts and bulletins issued by the Department of Meteorology in this regards.

Misty conditions can be expected in Central, Sabaragamuwa, and Southern provinces during the morning.

Showers or thundershowers will occur at times in Eastern province. Showers or thundershowers may occur at several places elsewhere during the evening or night. Heavy showers about 100mm are likely at some places in Central, Sabaragamuwa, Eastern and Southern provinces.

.Winds will be North-easterly in the sea areas off the costs extending from Pottuvil to Galle via Trincomalee, Kankasanthurai, Puttalam and Colombo. Wind speed will be (30-40)kmph and it will increase up to 50 kmph at times in these sea areas. Winds will be variable in direction in the other sea areas around the island and wind speed will be (25-35) kmph.

The sea areas off the coast extending from Pottuvil to Galle via Trincomalee, Kankasanthurai Puttalam and Colombo will be fairly rough at times. The other sea areas around the island will be moderate. Strong gusty winds and very rough seas can be expected during thundershowers.

The general public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions minimize damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

The South-West monsoon is gradually getting established over the island.

Showers or thundershowers will occur at times in the Western, Sabaragamuwa and North-western provinces and in Galle, Matara, Kandy and Nuwara-Eliya districts. Fairly heavy showers  above 50 mm are likely at some places in the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces and in Galle and Matara districts. Fair weather will prevail over the rest of the island.

Fairly strong winds about (30-40) kmph can be expected at times over the Western slopes of the central hills, the Northern, North-central, North-western and Southern provinces and in Trincomalee district.

The general public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damage caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

The National Building Research Organisation [NBRO] has issued landslide early warnings to the Districts of Colombo, Gampaha, Kalutara, Kegalle, Nuwara Eliya and Ratnapura valid from 09:00 hrs on 23.05.2026 to 09:00 hrs on 24.05.2026

Accordingly,
LEVEL III [RED] landslide early warnings have been issued to the Divisional Secretaries Divisions and surrounding areas of Deraniyagala, Ruwanwella and Dehiowita in the Kegalle district and Ratnapura, Ayagama, Kuruwita and Eheliyagoda in the Ratnapura district.

LEVEL II [AMBER] landslide early warnings have been issued to the Divisional Secretaries Divisions and surrounding areas of Seethawaka and Padukka in the Colombo district, Attanagalla in the Gampaha district, Palindanuwara, Ingiriya, Bulathsinhala and Horana in the Kalutara district, Yatiyanthota in the Kegalle district and Pelmadulla, Kiriella, Kalawana, Nivithigala and Elapatha in the Ratnapura district.

LEVEL I [YELLOW] landslide early warnings have been issued to the Divisional Secretaries Divisions and surrounding areas of Divulapitiya and Mirigama in the Gampaha district, Mathugama and Agalawatta in the Kalutara district, Bulathkohupitiya in the Kegalle district, and Ambagamuwa in the Nuwara Eliya district.

Showers or thundershowers will occur at times in the Western, Sabaragamuwa and North-western provinces and inAnuradhapura,  Galle, Matara, Kandy and Nuwara-Eliya districts.  Heavy showers about 100 mm are likely at some places in the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces and in Galle and Matara districts.  Showers or thundershowers may occur at a few places in the Uva province and in Ampara and Batticaloa districts after 1.00 pm.

Fairly strong winds about (30-40) kmph can be expected at times over the Western slopes of the central hills, the Northern, North-central, North-western and Southern provinces and in Trincomalee district.

The general public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damage caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers
