Gemunu threatens strike over trishaws and motorbikes being pressed into bus lane

Lanka Private Bus Owners Association (LPBOA) yesterday expressed dismay at a decision by the police to funnel three wheelers and motorcycles into the bus lane.

LPBOA President Gemunu Wijeratne said that if that decision was not reversed, private bus owners would go on strike.

Addressing the media in Nugegoda yesterday, Wijeratne said that allowing three wheelers and motor bikes to use the bus lane could be considered a violation of laws.

“The maximum speed limit for a three wheeler is 40 kmph. Is it fair for a bus carrying 60 passengers to follow a three wheeler? There is always the possibility motorcyclists might meet with accidents when they weave into bus lanes at breakneck speed. Who will take responsibility for it? On some roads there are only two lanes. How feasible is it to have lane laws implemented on such roads?”
