Garlic scam: CID asked why instructions ignored
Public Security Minister Rear Admiral Sarath Weerasekera has directed IGP C.D. Wickremaratne to probe why the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) had sought to question journalists, including editors of The Island, Divaina and Lankadeepa over news reports and editorial comments on the garlic scam at the Lanka Sathosa Limited, ignoring specific instructions issued against the move. The CID wanted to question journalists following a complaint lodged by Trade Minister Bandula Gunawardena
Weerasekera also ordered that the ongoing investigation into the Sathosa racket handled by the Peliyagoda Special Investigation Unit, be transferred to the CID for a wider investigation.
Former Executive Director of the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) Thushan Gunawardena, who caused a furore by exposing the top management at the LSL, has offered to assist the CID to bring the investigations into a successful conclusion. (SF)
