Former Deputy Chairman of the Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB) L.A. Wimalaratne, was released on a personal bail of Rs. 5 million on Tuesday by the Tissamaharama Magistrate’s Court, following his arrest earlier in the day in connection with a money laundering investigation.

Wimalaratne was taken into custody by the CID at his residence in Mamadala, Ambalantota. The arrest followed an ongoing probe into the alleged illegal construction of a luxury mansion on state-owned land in Kataragama.

Presenting evidence in court, CID officials claimed that Wimalaratne had played a cruical role in the construction of the property and he had been prosecuted under anti-money laundering laws. As part of his bail conditions, the court ordered him to report to the CID every six months.

The mansion in question has become the focus of a broader CID investigation involving former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, Yoshitha Rajapaksa, and other members of the Rajapaksa family. Both Gotabaya and Yoshitha Rajapaksa have already provided statements to investigators.

In a related development, a former Chairman of the Kataragama Pradeshiya Sabha had earlier been arrested in connection with the same case.
