EPDP urges mixed electoral system for Parliamentary elections

The Parliamentary elections should be held under a mixed electoral system, EPDP leader and Minister of Fisheries Douglas Devananda told the media on Wednesday (08). He said that he had already proposed it to the Parliament select committee on electoral reforms.
“There are 225 seats in Parliament. 150 of them have to be elected under the first-past-the-post system while the rest should be elected under the Proportional Representation sytem and appointed via the National List. The Minister said that Vavuniya, Mannar, Mullaitivu and Kilinochchi should be made separate electoral districts before the next general election. “MPs should be elected using proportional representation in these districts. Moreover, the delimitation process in the Northern Province should be finalised before holding the election. There are many issues with delimitation,” he said.
On the other hand, the local government election should be held under the proportional representation system, he said. “We hold them now under a mixed system and there has been so much instability created because of this. Initially, we also supported the mixed system but are now convinced it is a failure,” the Minister said.
The Governor of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL), Dr. Nandalal Weerasinghe, officially handed over the Financial Statements and Operations Report 2024 of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka to President Anura Kumara Disanayake at the Presidential Secretariat on Tuesday (29).
A copy of the report was also presented to Secretary to the President Dr. Nandika Sanath Kumanayake.
Several senior officials from the Central Bank were present at the occasion.

The Heat Index Forecast is calculated by using relative humidity and maximum temperature and this is the condition that is felt on your body. This is not the forecast of maximum temperature. It is generated by the Department of Meteorology for the next day period and prepared by using global numerical weather prediction model data.
Effect of the heat index on human body is mentioned in the above table and it is prepared on the advice of the Ministry of Health and Indigenous Medical Services.
ACTION REQUIRED
Job sites: Stay hydrated and takes breaks in the shade as often as possible.
Indoors: Check up on the elderly and the sick.
Vehicles: Never leave children unattended.
Outdoors: Limit strenuous outdoor activities, find shade and stay hydrated.
Dress: Wear lightweight and white or light-colored clothing.
