Devananda keen to obtain release of fishers detained in Andaman Island
Eelam People’s Democratic Party Leader and Fisheries Minister Douglas Devananda has directed the Director General of Fisheries Department Susantha Kahawatte to take tangible measures to secure the release of four Sri Lankan fishermen detained in the Andaman Island after they drifted into Indian waters there.
Instructions in this regard have been issued at a meeting chaired by Minister Devananda at his ministry last Tuesday (9).
According to the Fisheries Ministry, the vessel carrying the four fishermen had drifted about 600 nautical miles following engine trouble before being arrested by the Indian Navy. They had sailed from the Valachchenai fisheries harbour.
