Deepti Sharma finished with match figures of 9 for 39 as India hammered England by 347 runs, which is the highest margin of victory by runs in Women’s Test history. Deepti took 4 for 32 in the second innings while Pooja Vastrakar took three wickets as England caved without any resistance on the third day to be bowled for 131, five fewer than they managed in the first innings.

England were already up against it when they were set 479 for victory given that 245 is the highest total achieved in fourth innings of women’s Tests. They began steadily after India declared on their overnight score of 186/6 with Sophia Dunkley and Tammy Beaumont scoring a string of boundaries. Then Renuka Thakur seamed a ball away from the Beamont’s defence to hit the stumps and open the floodgates.

By the 14th over, they were 68/4 with Vastrakar wreaking havoc. The first of her wickets, that of Dunkley, was slightly fortuitous when a strong slash went straight to gully where Harleen Deol took a sharp catch. The next ball, however, was a thing of beauty as Vastrakar got a nip-backer to breach Nat Sciver-Brunt’s defences. Vastrakar then got the big one of Heather Knight when the England captain nicked a ball outside off-stump.

England were on the way down and Deepti, fresh off a first-innings five-fer, hastened their downfall. She had Danni Wyatt caught at slip and in her next over got Amy Jones to chip a simple catch to mid-wicket. Kate Cross and Lauren Filer were cleaned up before Rajeshwari Gayakwad completed the formalities with her second wicket of the innings.

Brief scores:
India Women
428 & 186/6 decl. (Harmanpreet Kaur 44*; Charlie Dean 4-68) beat England Women 136 & 131 (Deepti Sharma 4-32, Pooja Vastrakar 3-23) by 347 runs.

The attacks came after months of tension with the US, which has accused Venezuelan President Maduro of being involved in drug trafficking. Maduro has denied the accusations.

On Thursday, Maduro indicated he was open to negotiating a deal with the US to combat drug trafficking. The US has carried out more than 20 air strikes in the sea near Venezuela since September, as it slapped sanctions and upped military pressure on Caracas.
