CPSL condemns US–Israeli strikes on Iran, calls for global action

Published

on

The Communist Party of Sri Lanka has strongly condemned the recent U.S.–Israeli military operations against Iran, calling them a “heinous crime” and a serious violation of international law.

In a statement released today, CPSL General Secretary Dr. G Weerasinghe denounced the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, and described the strikes as part of a broader pattern of U.S. and Israeli military aggression in the Middle East. The party warned that such actions risk escalating regional tensions and could potentially trigger a wider, uncontrollable conflict.

“The U.S., acting in concert with Israel, continues to pursue a policy of militarised domination in West Asia,” the statement said. CPSL accused both countries of destabilising the region, engaging in regime-change operations, and using unilateral force to further geopolitical and economic interests at the expense of local populations.

Full text of the statement: The Communist Party of Sri Lanka (CPSL) strongly and unequivocally condemns the heinous crime committed by United States and Israel by killing the Supreme Leader of Iran Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and the latest acts of military aggression carried out illegally by the United States of America and Israel against the Islamic Republic of Iran. These attacks represent a grave violation of international law, an assault on the sovereignty of a United Nations member state, and a reckless escalation that threatens to plunge the entire Middle East into a wider and uncontrollable conflict, which may escalate into a World War.

The CPSL notes with deep concern that the United States of America, acting in concert with Israel, continues to pursue a policy of militarised domination in West Asia. These actions are not isolated incidents, but part of a long-standing pattern of destabilisation, regime-change operations, and unilateral use of force designed to secure geopolitical and economic interests at the expense of the peoples of the region. The latest strikes against Iran are yet another manifestation of this imperialist agenda.

We further condemn Israel’s role in provoking and intensifying regional tensions through its ongoing occupation, its repeated violations of international humanitarian law, and its continued military operations beyond its borders. The coordinated U.S.–Israeli attack on Iran is inseparable from the broader strategy of suppressing resistance to their hegemony and silencing states that refuse to submit to Western diktat.

The CPSL stands firmly with the Iranian people and all peoples of the Middle East who have endured decades of war, sanctions, blockades, and foreign interference. We reiterate that peace in the region cannot be achieved through bombs, assassinations, or coercion, but only through respect for sovereignty, adherence to international law, and the right of nations to determine their own political and economic paths free from external pressure.

We call upon the international community, especially the Non-Aligned Movement and progressive forces worldwide, to oppose this dangerous escalation and to demand an immediate end to U.S.–Israeli military operations. Sri Lanka, with its long tradition of non-alignment, must not remain silent in the face of such blatant aggression.

The CPSL reaffirms its solidarity with Iran and all nations resisting imperialist intervention. We call upon the Government of Sri Lanka to condemn this aggression and to urge the global community to work towards de-escalation, dialogue, and a just and lasting peace in the Middle East.

President

By Shamindra Ferdinando

A spokesperson for the US Embassy in Colombo declared that the United States and Sri Lanka maintain a long-standing defence partnership, grounded in transparency, mutual respect, and shared interests.

The official said so in response to The Island query regarding President Anura Kumara Dissanayake’s recent bombshell disclosure, in Parliament, that his government declined to allow the US Air Force to use the Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport, following the eruption of the latest West Asia war.

We sought views of the US on President Dissanayake’s claim against the backdrop of Sri Lanka being a party to the Acquisition and Cross-Servicing Agreement (ACSA) since 2007. Sri Lanka extended the ACSA in 2017, for another 10-year period, and its extension comes up next year.

The President revealed that the US had requested permission to use Mattala, between 04 and 08 March.

Claiming that the request had been made on 26 February, two days before the war began, President Dissanayake said that the US had sought to land two aircraft, carrying eight anti-ship missiles, but that the request had been turned down to maintain Sri Lanka’s neutrality. The President revealed that the aircraft were to come from a US base in Djibouti.

The US embassy pokesperson explained that questions related to operational movements, including ‘Operation Epic Fury’, should be directed to the Department of War (DOW) in Washington.

Camp Lemonnier is the primary base of operations for US Africa Command in the Horn of Africa. China, too, has its only overseas military base in Djibouti in the vicinity.

Military sources said whatever various interested parties said about US-Sri Lanka relations, the former provided significant intelligence support during last phase of the conflict that enabled the Navy to hunt down floating LTTE arsenals in international waters. Of the eight LTTE vessels sunk, the US backed four hits with specific intelligence, sources said.

Governor Weerasinghe also mentioned that he had not seen any reports about Sri Lankans returning to the country from the Middle East due to the ongoing conflict.

The Central Bank Governor, however, acknowledged that there had been a decrease in tourist arrivals. He confirmed that tourist arrivals had decreased by around 17 percent due to the current volatile situation in the Middle East.
