Belgium invited to invest in Trinco, Galle ports

Belgium Ambassador Didier Vanderhasselt meeting Minister de Silva

Ports, Shipping and Aviation Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva has invited Belgium to invest in the ports and shipping sector here.

The request was made when Belgium Ambassador Didier Vanderhasselt met Minister de Silva at his office yesterday (05).

A senior spokesperson for the Ministry said that Minister de Silva had received an assurance from the Belgian Ambassador regarding their willingness to provide the latest technology required to develop Sri Lanka’s ports.

The official said that de Silva requested the Belgium envoy to support efforts being made to develop the ports of Trincomalee and Galle while extending an invitation to participate in these undertakings.

Motor Vehicles (Driving License Levy) Regulations No. 3 of 2022 to be amended

The Werahara office of the Department of Motor Traffic performs issuance of temporary driving licenses in this country based on the driving licenses issued overseas, and measures have been initiated to render the service from a service window of the Department of Motor Traffic established at the Bandaranayake International Airport from 03.08.2025.

The fees charged for issuing temporary driving licenses have been published in Motor Vehicles (Driving License Levy) Regulations No. 3 of 2022 prepared under the provisions of the Motor Traffic (Authority 203) Act.

But, as the fee of Rupees 2,000/- charged for the service is not sufficient, the requirement of amending the regulations has been recognized.

The regulations for introducing the revised fees have been published in the government extraordinary gazette
notification No. 2463/04 dated 17.11.2025. Therefore, the Cabinet of Ministers granted approval to the resolution furnished by the Minister of Transport, Highways and Urban Development to
submit the regulations to the Parliament for its concurrence.

The instructions required for granting relief to farmers for the short term crops devastated due to  the extreme  weather have been issued through Budget Circular No. 08/2025 and 08/2025 (i).

Considering the economic importance of the export agriculture sector, the requirement of re planting long term export agricultural crops that were destroyed by the floods and landslides, the Cabinet of Ministers granted approval to the
resolution furnished by the  President in his capacity as the Minister of Finance, Planning and Economic Development to pay the cultivators engaged in pepper, coffee and cardamom an
allowance subject to a maximum of rupees 425,000/- per hectare for replanting as well as to provide seedlings free of charge from the Department of Export Agriculture.
