Army Commando sergeant arrested on suspicion of selling T-56 ammunition to Kehelbaddara Padme’s gang
A sergeant of the Ganemulla Army Commando Regiment has been arrested by the CID for allegedly selling T-56 ammunition to ‘Commando Salintha’, an alleged underworld figure, described as the “advisor” to underworld leader Kehelbaddara Padme’s gang.
The arrest was made Thursday night, following information revealed during the interrogation of ‘Commando Salintha’, who is currently in CID custody.
Investigators said the suspect had, on several occasions, supplied ammunition to underworld members on the instructions of Salintha. The CID noted that the sergeant is now being extensively questioned in connection with the racket.
Police sources said that investigations are also underway into several other members of the security forces, suspected of having supplied arms and ammunition to criminal gangs.
This is the second arrest of a member of the elite Commando Regiment in connection with the case. Earlier, a lieutenant colonel was taken into custody on similar charges of providing weapons and ammunition to Commando Salintha. He, too, remains under CID custody.
According to investigators, the probe is being widened to determine the extent of security forces’ involvement in supplying arms to the underworld.
