The House yesterday approved the Anti-Corruption Bill without a division.

“The Bill has been passed with amendments,” Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena informed the House. Both government and Opposition MPs submitted 196 amendments to the Bill which was debated for two days. The Bill was passed at the second reading stage last week, but owing to time constraints, the committee stage proceedings were put off till yesterday as the drafters needed time to include the amendments that have been agreed.

The Supreme Court informed the Speaker that the draft Bill had 28 clauses inconsistent with the Constitution. Those clauses were amended. (SI)
