Amidst unprecedented political turmoil and continuing uncertainty, two cruise ships MV Arius and MV Gem, each with capacity to carry more than 800 passengers, are currently berthed at the Hambantota International Port (HIP) for month-long layups. The ship crews will remain on board for the period. The HIP issued a statement quoting Lance Zuo, General Manager, Commercial and Marketing as having said: “Hambantota International Port provides the best facilities in the region for all kinds of vessels of any size from small and medium sized ships to large tankers. We provide safe mooring, security for ship and personnel, ship supplies, etc. These types of vessels contribute to increasing awareness among ship owners and ship managers, of the diverse portfolio of services HIP can offer”

This service offered by HIP also supports the local communities of Hambantota, who supply fresh produce and other necessities for the laid-up ships.  Local service providers registered under HIP offer variety of services, ship repairs, chandelling and other services on a need basis when vessels are on long layups at the port.”
