Amendment of Anti – Dumping and Countervailing Duties Act, No. 2 of 2018 and the Safeguard Measures Act No. 3 of 2018 to be gazetted

The Cabinet of Ministers granted approval to the resolution furnished by the President to publish the draft bills for Anti – Dumping and Countervailing Duties Act, No. 2 of 2018 and the Safeguard Measures Act No. 3 of 2018 in the government gazette notification and subsequently forward the same to the Parliament for its concurrence.

The requirement to introduce corresponding amendments to Anti – Dumping and Countervailing Duties Act, No. 2 of 2018 and the Safeguard Measures Act No. 3 of 2018 has been recognized when preparing the Economic Transformation draft bill. The applicable draft bills have been prepared by the Legal Draftsmen and the clearance of the Attorney General has been granted to those draft bills.

Actress Semini gets bail

The Colombo Magistrate yesterday (11) granted bail to popular actress Semini Iddamalgoda, arrested in connection with several warrants issued over alleged non-payment of dues.

She was taken into custody and produced before the court by the Welikada Police, in respect of seven outstanding arrest warrants issued for failure to make legally required payments — including Employees’ Provident Fund contributions — related to a private security firm run by her.

The police informed the court that four of the warrants had been issued by the Colombo Magistrate’s Court, two by the Matara Magistrate’s Court, and one by the Tangalle Magistrate’s Court.

The counsel appearing for Iddamalgoda told the court that their client was a professional actress with no intention of evading legal proceedings. They also stated that in several of the relevant cases, the outstanding payments had already been settled and the respective complaints had been withdrawn by the Department of Labour.

After considering the submissions, Additional Magistrate Bandara Ilangasinghe ordered the release of the suspect on personal bail of Rs. 100,000 for each of the four cases filed before the Colombo court.The Magistrate ordered Iddamalgoda to submit proof of the relevant payments related to these complaints on or before 19 May.

Vesak celebrations:Over 8,000 police personnel deployed in Colombo

Over 8,000 policemen would be deployed in Colombo starting today (12) to ensure the safety of the public visiting the city for Vesak celebrations, said Colombo DIG Udithe Priyantha Liyanage.DIG Liyanage said that in addition to regular police officers, personnel from the STF, officers in civvies, and intelligence officials would also be deployed. The DIG said that more than 20 Vesak pandals and numerous Dansal and Vesak zones were in and around the city, and police would provide security throughout the week, starting today.

Key Vesak zones would be located at Bauddhaloka Mawatha, Gangaramaya, Colombo Municipal Council area near Beira Lake in the premises of the Presidential Secretariat and the Prime Minister’s Office.

DIG Liyanage requested the public to refrain from bringing large bags when visiting Vesak zones in Colombo. He asked motorists to refrain from sounding loud horns.

Meanwhile, starting today, 25 Vesak pandals have been put up in Colombo city and its suburbs. They are at Kosgas Handiya junction, Orugodawatta, and Thotalanga in the Grandpass police division (three pandals), Dematagoda, Borella, and Kelaniya Rajamaha Viharaya area in the Kelaniya police division (three pandals), Pettah and Peliyagoda Nawa Loka and the Peliyagoda Fish Market, Welikada, Maharagama, Kottawa, Homagama, Dehiwala (Waidya Road), Bellanwila, Piliyandala, Kiribathgoda, Moratuwa, Athurugiriya, and Malabe.

Vesak 2025: Presidential pardon for some prisoners

President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has given a special presidential pardon to 384 inmates in view of Vesak 2025.

Prison Media Spokesman, Commissioner Gamini B. Dissanayake, yesterday, said that 384 inmates, including four women, would be released today under a special presidential pardon.

Among them, 40 are from the Welikada Prison, 36 from the Wariyapola Prison, and 30 from the Mahara prison, with the rest being released from other prisons across the country.
