Issued at 05.30 a.m. on 31 January 2025 by the Department of Meteorology

Misty conditions can be expected at some places in Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central and Southern provinces during the morning.

Showers or thundershowers will occur at times in Northern, North-central, Eastern and Uva provinces and in Matale, Nuwara-Eliya and Hambantota districts. Showers or thundershowers will occur at several places in Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces and in Galle, Matara and Kandy districts in the evening or night.

WEATHER FORECAST FOR SEA AREAS AROUND THE ISLAND DURING NEXT 24 HOURS
[Issued at 05.30 a.m. on 31 January 2025]

Showers or thundershowers will occur at several places in the sea areas off the coasts extending from Trincomalee to Galle via Batticaloa and Hambantota. Showers or thundershowers may occur at a few places in the other sea areas around the island during the evening or night.

Winds will be north-easterly and speed will be (25-35) kmph. Wind speed can increase up to (40-45) kmph at times in the sea areas off the coast extending from Negombo to Kankasanthurai via Puttalam and Mannar and from Galle to Pottuvil via Hambantota.

The sea areas off the coasts extending from Negombo to Kankasanthurai via Puttalam and Mannar and from Galle to Pottuvil via Hambantota will be fairly rough at times. Strong gusty winds and very rough seas can be expected during thundershowers.

The general public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

Showers or thundershowers will occur at several places in the Central, Sabaragamuwa, Southern and Uva provinces after 2.00 pm.

The general public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

Warm Weather Advisory Issued by the Natural Hazards Early Warning Centre of the Department of Meteorology at 3.30 p.m. on 16 March 2026, valid for 17 March 2026

The general public are warned that the Heat index, the temperature felt on human body is likely to increase up to ‘Caution level’ at some places in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Southern, North-central and North-western provinces and in Monaragala, Mannar and Vavuniya districts.

The Heat Index Forecast is calculated by using relative humidity and maximum temperature and this is the condition that is felt on your body. This is not the forecast of maximum temperature. It is generated by the Department of Meteorology for the next day period and prepared by using global numerical weather prediction model data.

Effect of the heat index on human body is mentioned in the above table and it is prepared on the advice of the Ministry of Health and Indigenous Medical Services.

ACTION REQUIRED

Job sites: Stay hydrated and takes breaks in the shade as often as possible.

Indoors: Check up on the elderly and the sick.

Vehicles: Never leave children unattended.

Outdoors: Limit strenuous outdoor activities, find shade and stay hydrated.

Dress: Wear lightweight and white or light-colored clothing.
