The Cyclonic storm “MICHAUNG” (PRONOUNCED AS “MIGJAUM”) over Southwest Bay of Bengal was located near latitude 12.8°N and longitude 81.6°E, at 2330hrs of 03 December and about 365 km northeast of Jaffna. The system is expected to intensify further and move northwestward away from Sri Lanka towards North Tamil Nadu coast of India. Thereafter, it would move northwards and cross South Andhra Pradesh coasts around December 05, 2023.

Showers or thundershowers will occur at times in Western, Sabaragamuwa, Northern, Southern and North-western provinces. Fairly heavy showers above 75 mm are likely at some places. Showers or thundershowers will occur at several places elsewhere after 01.00 p.m.

Winds will be South-westerly and wind speed will be (30-40) kmph in the sea areas around the island. Wind speed may increase up to (60-70) kmph in the sea areas off the coast extending from Mannar to Trincomalee via Kankasanthurai and up to (50-55) kmph in the other sea areas around the island.

The sea areas off the coast extending from Mannar to Trincomalee via Kankasanthurai will be very rough at times while the other sea areas around the Island can be rough at times. Temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas can be expected during thundershowers.

According to the today’s latest weather analysis, the low-pressure area located northeast of  Sri Lanka, still persists. The Department of Meteorology is continuously monitoring the behavior, development and path of the system.

Due to the influence of the above system, Showers or thundershowers will occur at times and cloudy skies are expected in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, North-western and Northern provinces and in Anuradhapura, Galle and Matara districts. Fairly heavy showers about 75 mm are likely at some places in these areas. Showers or thundershowers may occur at a few places in the Uva and Eastern provinces after 1.00 pm.

The general public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damage caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

The low-pressure area located northeast of Sri Lanka, still persists. This system is expected to move away from Sri Lanka during the next 36 hours.

Cloudy skies are expected over most parts of the island.

Showers or thundershowers will occur at times in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, North-western and Northern provinces and in Anuradhapura, Galle and Matara districts. Very heavy showers about 150mm are likely at some places in the Western, Sabaragamuwa and North-western provinces. Heavy showers above 100mm are likely at some places in Galle and Matara districts.

Showers or thundershowers may occur at a few places in the Uva and Eastern provinces after 1.00 pm.
